Paola won the Fort Scott Dual Tournament for the second year in a row and third time overall at the FSHS gymnasium Saturday as the Panthers won all five duals. CANEY — Colt and Bryce Eck performed well as Uniontown’s only entrants in the Caney Valley KanOkla Wrestling Tournament Saturday in a field of wrestlers from much larger schools. Bryce, a freshman, finished in second place in the 132-pound class. He defeated Dylon Morrill of Cherryvale by an 8-1 score in the first round then went on to pin Issac Jennings of Fredonia in the third period of the semifinal round. The Kansas State High School Activities Association released Sub-State assignments for basketball in classes 3A on down and wrestling for all four classes Thursday morning. Fort Scott High’s wrestlers hosted their final duals of the season Tuesday night, beating Iola in the last dual of the night to break a year-long losing streak in duals. FREDONIA — Freshman Mersadies Roof won the 170-pound weight class at the Fredonia Invitational here Saturday, going undefeated on the day. She was one of seven Tigers entered in the girls’ division. Roof pinned her first opponent in just 53 seconds, taking down Emma Lane of Fredonia. She then pinned Jamie Jeffries of Parsons in 48 seconds, Hailey Reavis of Burlington in 33 seconds and Heaven Fiman of Eureka 10 seconds into the third period...

Luke Harris (above) competed and placed at the 63rd Annual Flo Tulsa Nationals January 18-20. Rich in tradition, this is the oldest most prestigious, junior wrestling event in the world. There were athletes from 40 states ranging from 4 to 16 years of age competing for a national title. ...

FRONTENAC — Frontenac retained possession of the Cannonball Clash traveling trophy here Thursday night, using wins in five out of the six weight classes between 132 and 170 pounds to aid in a 32-27 win over Fort Scott High. PAOLA —Fort Scott’s Kyle Montojo finished in fourth place at 126 pounds in the Paola Invitational here Friday.Corbin Shelden placed sixth at 113 and Grayson Quick was eighth at 220. Montojo pinned Paola’s Tommy Downum in the first round at 126. He then pinned Andrew Park of Lawrence-Free State. He lost to Cael Lynch of Eudora in the semifinals. Montojo then pinned Sylas Stone of Columbus before he was pinned by Paola’s Michael Searcy in the third-place match...

BASEHOR — The Basehor-Linwood Bobcat Classic, which included nine ranked Kansas schools in its 33-team lineup, proved tough for Fort Scott High’s wrestlers here over the weekend. Only one of the Tigers was able to win a match. — Silas Taylor in a 132-pound consolation match. ...

BONNER SPRINGS — Kyle Montojo finished fifth in the 126-pound weight class here Saturday at the Bonner Springs Dick Burns Mat Classic. The Tigers finished 14th as a team with 13 points. Host Bonner Springs was the champion. Montojo won his first-round match over Ethan Snodgrass, who was competing as a non-scoring member (unattached) of another school’s team, by pin in his first-round match. Montojo lost an 8-2 decision to Hunter Ross of Lee’s Summit North in the quarterfinals...

CHERRYVALE — It was about two or three weeks sooner than expected but Fort Scott High School’s new girls’ wrestling team took part in its first meet here Saturday. Team scores weren’t kept but seven girls participated and three of them placed first in their brackets...

OTTAWA — Although it this was a dual tournament here Saturday, Fort Scott High’s boys’ wrestling team was looking for good individual results as the Tigers were short-handed at the Ottawa Dual Tournament. One of the bigger dual tournaments around, the 12 teams were divided into four pools of three teams each. Then based on where they finished in those pools, the teams were place in three divisions of four each when it was time to determine placers...

GARNETT —A pair of Uniontown wrestlers took third place in their respective brackets at the Anderson County Invitational here Saturday. Graham Hathaway finished in third place in the 312-pound division. In his pool matches, he went 2-1 to advance to the championship round. He took an 11-3 major decision over Jonathan Bownes of Jayhawk-Linn in his first match and pinned Dominic Ireland of Anderson County in his second. Fort Scott High School has had girls join the wrestling team before. Last season, Kaley Reyes was a member of the team. But she had to wrestle on the varsity with boys and that created competitive disadvantages. There are some girls who can wrestle on par with boys. ...

Fort Scott High School has been selected to host a Class 4A-Division I Sub-State Tournament March 1-3. The Tigers will host an all-Southeast Kansas League tournament with Labette County, Chanute and Independence also traveling to the FSHS main gymnasium. This is the last season of the current format for post-season play in 4A-I as next year, Class 4A will have 32 teams without any divisions and will switch to the post-season system currently in effect in classes 6A and 5A...

There will be 10 returning letterwinners for the Fort Scott High School wrestling team this season. One of them, however, probably isn’t going to be three-time State-qualifier Zarek Fewell, who has said he wants to concentrate on preparing to play college football, although Metcalf did include him as one of his returnees. Senior Derek Bollinger, who missed nearly all of last season due to injury, is not expected to be on the team this season. Bollinger was also a State qualifier in past seasons...

Second-year Uniontown head wrestling coach Cody Kramer doesn’t have any seniors out for his team this season. But of his seven wrestlers, three are returning letterwinners, including a State Tournament qualifier. “Our three returners know our program’s expectations,” Kramer, a Fort Scott High graduate, said. “We are going to be young but I believe by past seasons that we will be the most physically-ready team in our (Class) 3-2-1A Regional. ROSE HILL -- Zarek Fewell was the only medalist for Fort Scott High School at the always-loaded Rose Hill Invitational over the weekend, finishing fourth at 152 pounds. Fort Scott only brought four athletes to the event. Fewell, who is ranked No. 6 in Class 4A at 152 pounds by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association, began the tournament with a 13-5 major decision over Garrett Thompson of Jayhawk-Linn. Fewell then went on to defeated Salina Central's Donivyn Will in overtime by a 5-3 score...

There is no doubt concerning the level of dedication Alvin Metcalf, Jr. has for the sport of wrestling. The former Tiger, now Fort Scott High's head coach, also looks to promote the sport whenever he can. The effort he made on Thursday night by staging an event at Memorial Hall appeared to be a rousing success. ...

He pinned each of his first three opponents, Erie freshman Michael Winslow in 50 seconds, Independence sophomore Ryan Bruce in 1:59 and Coffeyville senior Alex Smith in 1:41. Tigers repeat last year's 3rd-place finish

For the first time since the format began for the 2013-14 season, the Southeast Kansas League Dual Wrestling Tournament will be held in Fort Scott. The tournament will take place at the FSHS gymnasium Thursday beginning at 3 p.m. The seven schools will be seeded and then placed in a bracket. This will be a wrestling-style bracket with "wrestlebacks" determining places three through seven, not a common seven-team bracket with a bye included that one sees in basketball...

ROSE HILL -- The Rose Hill Invitational is one of the tougher wrestling tournaments in Kansas every year and this one proved no exception. Nine from Fort Scott High took part but only three brought home medals from the 24-school meeting. The Tigers finished 17th out of those 24 as a team with 57 points. ...
