Sub-State, Regional assignments released
The Kansas State High School Activities Association released Sub-State assignments for basketball in classes 3A on down and wrestling for all four classes Thursday morning.
With the changes in Class 4A that make Sub-State the same as classes 6A and 5A, Fort Scott High’s teams won’t know what their assignments are until seeding takes place at the end of the season.
Northeast will be the host school for a Class 2A basketball Sub-State which will also include Uniontown. The other teams assigned are Southeast, Howard-West Elk, Humboldt, Colgan, Oswego and Yates Center.
Basketball Sub-States will take place the week of February 25.
Fort Scott’s wrestling team has been assigned to a Class 4A Regional that will be held in Paola Feb. 15 ad 16. Other teams there will be Atchison, Baldwin, Eudora, Anderson County, Kansas City Bishop Ward, Kansas City-Piper, Prairie View, Louisburg, Osawatomie, Ottawa, Paola, Perry-Lecompton, Bishop Miege and tonganoxie.
Some of the schools at the Paola Regional are Class 3A schools in other sports but have been assigned to Class 4A under a 40/60 split rule that comes into play when lower classes do not have enough schools to have individual championships. The top 40 percent of the combined group of schools from Class 4A on down are assigned to the higher class and the bottom 60 percent are assigned to the lower, combined class. In wrestling’s case, 4A has 59 teams and 3-2-1A has 88.
Uniontown’s wrestlers will go to a Class 3-2-1A Regional at Fredonia on Feb. 15-16. The other teams there include host Fredonia, Anthony-Harper—Chaparral, Burden-Central, Canton-Galva, Cheney, Southeast, Cherryvale, Douglass, Erie, Eureka, Garden Plain, Halstead, Hillsboro, Howard-West Elk, Humboldt, Kingman, Leon-Bluestem, Marion, Jayhawk-Linn, Rosalia-Flinthills, and Whitewater-Remington.
