Eck second, Hathaway fifth at Caney
CANEY — Uniontown’s Colt Eck finished in second place in the varsity 152-pound division and Graham Hathaway was fifth at 132 pounds in the Kan-Okla Tournament at Caney Valley High School here Saturday.
The tournament also had a junior varsity division this season. Both Uniontown entrants, Ryan Todd at 150 and Dawson Bollinger at 189, placed second.
In team standings, Uniontown finished 11th in varsity standings with 35 points. Tecumseh-Shawnee Heights was the champion with 248.5 points followed by Springdale (Ark.) Har-Ber with 237 and Bentonville (Ark.) West with 164. No team scores were kept in the JV division.
Eck’s day began with a pin over John Smith of Pittsburg in the first round. He then pinned Sean Russell of Bentonville west in the quarterfinals and Angel Winstead of Caney Valley in the semifinals. Alex Wilson of Har-Ber pinned Eck in the championship match.
Hathaway drew a first-round bye, then pinned Josh Vanatta of Humboldt in the quarterfinal round. Logan Brede of Shawnee Heights pinned Hathaway in the semifinals.
In consolation, Hazen Benton of Leon-Bluestem took a 9-7 decision over Hathaway in the semifinal round. Hathaway won a 9-7 decision over Jonathan Bownes of Jayhawk-Linn in the fifth-place match.
Hayden Miller also competed on the varsity side. He lost his first match in the 170-pound bracket to Joshua Poyfair of Bentonville West by a 12-9 score. He then received two byes in consolation before he was pinned by Jared Hubner of Labette County in the third round of consolation.
Todd lost his first-round JV division match by pin to Coffeyville’s James O’Conner. He also lost by pin to Ryan Cline of Har-Ber before he pinned C’eara Darling of Parsons in the final round.
Bollinger lost both of his matches in a three-wrestler JV pool. He was pinned by Thomas Hopkins of Har-Ber and Ethan Samples of Coffeyville.
The Eagles also wrestled last Thursday at Humboldt but results were not available. The varsity team will compete in the Anderson County Tournament Saturday.
