Fort Scott High School’s wrestling team was both short-handed and inexperienced going into its annual home dual tournament Saturday morning. The Tigers went 0-5 in duals and finished in last place. But the accomplishment of the young squad wasn’t measured in win-loss records.

“We knew it was going to be a tough day going in,” FSHS head coach Alvin Metcalf, Jr. said. “We’ve known all year that we’re a little inexperienced. And I told the kids —and in fact, I printed up a sheet that said, ‘I don’t care about the results, it’s about the process. Wins, losses, whatever, I want to see effort. And I want to see application of things that we’ve been doing.’”

Since the 2010 tournament, which was the last time Fort Scott won it, the only team champions have been either Paola (2013, 2017) or Southwest (2011-12, 2014-16). Southwest came into the tournament ranked No. 2 in Class 5A by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association in its pre-season poll — and didn’t even bring seven of its wrestlers who were ranked in their weight classes in the pre-season — while Louisburg was No. 8 in Class 4A. Paola wasn’t ranked.

Metcalf said that the short amount of time wrestlers get in pre-season makes it difficult for inexperienced wrestlers to learn what to do in every situation that arises. They have just 2 1/2 weeks to get things in. The Tigers even held an extra Saturday practice to make up for some time lost at Thanksgiving.

“So it’s difficult when you’re inexperienced but if you give effort and you see kids getting after it,” Metcalf said. “I felt like we were doing the right things and we’ll bet back to work this week and mainly focus on ways to have fun and improve because you don’t want it to turn into a grind.”

The only Tiger with a winning record on the day was 126-pound senior Kyle Montojo, who went 4-1 — and that loss came in overtime. He won his first-round match over Tyler Secrest of Anderson County on a technical fall, 22-6. In the second round, he took an 11-5 win over Kyle Allen of Louisburg. In the third round, he took a 6-4 win over Paola’s Michael Searcy with a take down in the final moments.

Montojo’s loss came in the fourth round to Shawnee Mission West’s Christian Wyatt on a takedown with 11.7 seconds remaining in the overtime period for a final score of 3-1. But he came back for another technical fall, this by an 18-2 score, over Southwest’s Luke Richardson in the final round.

As a team, the rest of the young Tigers won only seven matches and five were by forfeit. On the mat, junior Logan Hall pinned Paola’s Dylan Newton with 56 seconds left in the second period of their 160-pound match, and senior Ben Daniels pinned Louisburg’s Hunter Day 44 seconds into their 285-pound bout.

“These kids are fighters,” Metcalf said. “We had a couple of injuries this week and we had some kids who had obligations to be out of town, so we were missing five kids out of our lineup. When you put the young kids in there, you just expect effort and they gave it to me. I don’t care what their record was at the end of the day. They’ll get their time when they wrestle like competition and at the end of the year, you’ll see a completely different kid on the mat.”

Paola defeated Blue Valley Southwest, 58-15, in the fourth round. The Timberwolves had beaten Louisburg, 36-34, in the first round and dominated Shawnee Mission West in the second, 63-14. They had trouble with Anderson County before winning, 37-29.

The Panthers’ win put them at 4-0 with Southwest and Louisburg each at 3-1. The Wildcats had a chance to create a three-way tie by beating Paola in the final round. But the Panthers took a 46-37 win to clinch the championship outright.

Paola led Louisburg, 22-0, after the first five matches but Louisburg won the next four to get within a point. Paola wrestlers picked up pins at 170 and 182 pounds to boost the lead to 34-21. Louisburg’s Austin Moore, ranked No. 5 in Class 4A at 195 pounds, pinned Jeffery Shartz at 195 to keep the Wildcats in the match, trailing 34-27.

Blake Batchelder clinched the dual for Paola by pinning Sam Kratcohvil in the 220-pound bout. That put the Panthers ahead 40-27, making it impossible for Louisburg to win the dual even with a pin at 285.

Paola broke a three-year championship streak for Blue Valley Southwest in the tournament. Southwest finished second at 4-1 with Louisburg third at 3-2, then Anderson County at 2-3 and Shawnee Mission West at 1-4 followed by Fort Scott.

The Tigers will compete in a tournament Saturday at Eudora.
