At a special meeting Tuesday, the Fort Scott Community College Board of Trustees discussed options with refinancing the college’s lease with Chevron Energy Management. The USD 235 Board of Education approved an insurance bid and bids for equipment and other district needs at the board’s May 8 meeting. After discussion and information from Tim Travis representing Billiard, Hammer and Hartman Insurance in Fort Scott, the board later in the meeting unanimously approved a motion to approve the quote of $77,910 from the company for property, casualty and workers compensation insurance for the 2017-18 school year...

Larry Mewhinney of Fort Scott checks out an antique Friday at the Pioneer Harvest Fiesta Swap Meet at the Bourbon County Fairgrounds. Mewhinney said he searches for items and collectibles to determine what the piece is for resale at auction. Six members of Fort Scott Community College’s softball team were named to the Region VI Division II All-District D Team on Tuesday. Fort Scott finished the 2017 season 22-33 but took third-seeded Highland to a third game in a first-round playoff series last week. Uniontown High School’s softball team will go into Regional play next week as winners of three of its last four games. Monday, the Eagles went to Chetopa for a Three Rivers League doubleheader and split with the Green Hornets. Uniontown won game one, 7-2, while Chetopa took the second game, 8-7...

Neither Uniontown baseball nor softball will have to play on Monday as each have drawn first-round byes in their respective Regional tournaments. ALTAMONT — Fort Scott High seniors Devin Brooks and Morgan Stoughton are event champions following the Southeast Kansas League Relays here Friday. Brooks defended his title the boys’ 3,200-meter run by turning in a time of 10:20.69. Chanute’s Reno Lemon was a distant second in 10:37.46. Brooks was also third in the 1,600 in 4:51.39...
