’Hounds rally in 9th but Cowley wins in 10
WICHITA — Fort Scott Community College scored 2 runs with 2 out in the bottom of the ninth inning here Friday but Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division champion Cowley scored a pair in the top of the 10th and went on to a 7-5 victory in the first round of bracket play at the Region VI Tournament at Lawrence Dumont Stadium.
Fort Scott (37-23), the only road team to win its first-round series last week, drops into elimination play and will face Barton (41-17) today at 10 a.m. The Cougars lost to Neosho County in the tournament opener Friday morning, 5-2. The Panthers (40-20) will face Cowley at 4 p.m. in a winners’ bracket semifinal.
The Greyhounds scored first as Mitch Sloan led off the bottom of the first with a triple and scored on Will Baker’s sacrifice fly.
Cowley (40-16) scored 2 in the top of the second to take its first lead. Brooks Zimmerman led off with a single to right and Keavon Edwards followed with a single to left. Zimmerman advanced to third on an error and scored when Dalton Dinkel singled past shortstop. Edwards scored on a single by Reid Fehr.
Fort Scott went back in front in the third. Baker was hit by the second pitch of the inning and Danny Crews drew a walk. Brandon Krennrich singled in Baker to tie the score and Sean Moore brought in Crews with a 2-out hit to make it 3-2.
The score stayed there until the top of the eighth. Connor Litton drew a leadoff walk then Zimmerman hit a triple to left that tied the score. Fort Scott head coach John Hill III brought in his closer, Kobie Schmitt, but he walked Edwards, who stole second. Ross Messina hit a sacrifice fly that Brought in Zimmerman. Dinkel singled to bring in Edwards and end Schmitt’s time on the hill.
Entering the game down 5-3, Joe Fagano was entrusted with thwarting the Tigers’ rally, which he did by striking out Fehr and Joel Spain.
Williams led off the ninth with a single, then Sloan drew a walk. Cowley pitcher Mason LeClair (3-0) struck out the next two batters but Krennrich doubled to bring in Sloan and Morrow singled up the middle to score Sloan with the tying run. Krennrich ended up third on the play but LeClair got Quinn Waterbury to fly out to center to end the inning.
Fagano (1-2) hit Edwards on a 3-0 pitch to start off the 10th. He went to second on a passed ball and to third on Messina’s single to right. Nathan Miller went in to pitch and got Dinkel to pop out to first baseman Waterbury in foul ground. Messina stole second and pinch-hitter Jack Duke brought in Edwards with the go-ahead run. Spain bunted to Waterbury to bring on Spain to make it 7-5.
Moore led off the bottom of the 10th and reached on an error. Ben McKenzie singled with Moore advancing to third. Mitch McCallister went in to run for McKenzie and moved to second when Mackay Williams grounded out to first.
Sloan was next and grounded to the pitcher, LeClair, who was somehow able to turn an inassisted double play to end the game.
Krennrich was 3 for 5 for Fort Scott while Waterbury was 2 for 4. Edwards went 3 for 3 for Cowley while Dinkel was 3 for 5.
In Friday’s late games, Jayhawk Conference-Western Division champ Hutchinson defeated Kansas City, 7-1, and Johnson County defeated Dodge City, 7-4. KCK (40-20) will take on Dodge City in an elimination game today at 1 p.m. while Hutchinson faces Johnson County in the other winners’ bracket semifinal at 7 p.m.
If Fort Scott wins today’s game, the Greyhounds will play at 1 p.m. Sunday. Winning that will put them into the fourth-place game (elimination bracket semifinal) at 7 p.m.
The tournament continues through at least Monday with an “if-necessary” game at 7 p.m. Tuesday night.
