Brooks, Stoughton champs at SEK Relays

ALTAMONT — Fort Scott High seniors Devin Brooks and Morgan Stoughton are event champions following the Southeast Kansas League Relays here Friday.

Brooks defended his title the boys’ 3,200-meter run by turning in a time of 10:20.69. Chanute’s Reno Lemon was a distant second in 10:37.46. Brooks was also third in the 1,600 in 4:51.39.

Stoughton won javelin even more easily than Brooks won his race. Stoughton won by 16 feet, going 141’ 5”. Runner-up Gage Friess of Parsons was second at 125’ 6”.

The Tigers finished with 66 team points to take fourth place in team standings as they won 14 medals. Pittsburg won its fourth straight championship with 184 points, tied for the second-highest score in meet history.

Pittsburg’s girls won their SEK Relays record-extending eighth consecutive title and came within 8 points of breaking the league record. The Purple Dragons scored 202 points. Fort Scott scored a record 209 in 1996.

A record held by a Fort Scott girl was broken when Pittsburg’s Daeshia Turner cleared 38’ 3” in the triple jump. FSHS graduate Adina Murry was the record holder, going 37’ 9” in 1997. No other records were broken this season.

Fort Scott’s girls finished fifth as a team with 33.5 points. The Tigers did not win any events but had three medalists in the 3,200 meters when Paxsten Eads finished second in 12:42.04, Kelsey Carpenter took third in 12:59.84, and Emma Davis was fifth in 13:20.88.

Tiger girls won 10 medals. Carpenter won a second when she finished third in the 1,600 meters in 5:48.29.

Other medalists for the Tigers:

• Gabrielle Allen placed third in girls’ javelin with a mark of 86’ 8”.

• Gracie Krokroskia was fifth in the girls’ 300-meter hurdles in 52.28.

• Morgan Rohr tied for sixth in girls’ pole vault, clearing 7 feet event.

• Gabriella Clements was sixth in girls’ triple jump at 30’ 4”.

• Samantha Race finished sixth in girls’ shot put at 30’ 5”.

•Abby Humble claimed sixth in girls’ discus with a mark of 87’ 6”.

• Tyson Bolden was a double medalist, finishing third in the pole vault at 9’ 6” and fifth in the 300-meter hurdles in 48.45.

• Antwaun Martinez placed third in boys’ triple jump at 39’ 4”.

• Makyn Wade was third in boys’ shot put with an effort of 41’ 9 1/4”.

• John Montojo won two medals in individual events, taking fourth in the 200 meters in 23.81 and sixth in the 100 in 11.67.

• Connor Fess was fourth in the boys’ 800 in 2:06.10.

• Levi Reichard was fourth in discus with a throw of 105’ 9”.

• The boys’ 4x400 relay team of Fess, John Montojo, Kyle Montojo and Jessie Lawrence finished fourth in 3:46.83.

• The 4x100 relay with John Montojo, Lawrence, Korbyn Reyes and Kyle Montojo was fifth in 46.54.

•Kyle Montojo was sixth in long jump, going 19’ 9”.

The Tigers will go to Paola for Class 4A Regional competition next Friday. Field events will begin at 2 p.m. with track preliminaries slated to start at 4 p.m. and finals 30 minutes after the last preliminary.

Schools attending will include SEK members Labette County, Chanute and Parsons along with Baxter Springs, Burlington, Columbus, Frontenac, Anderson County, Girard, Iola, Prairie View, Louisburg, Osawatomie, Ottawa and host Paola.
