Lunch is on me
Posted Friday, February 26, 2010, at 10:36 AM2I have lots of memories of my granddad. The war stories. The golf lessons. The "father-son" talks. But the most recent memory I have of my grandfather is perhaps the one I will treasure the most. For the last couple of years, I have been having lunch about twice a week with him, going to one of his favorite places to eat, talking about life in general, sharing sports scores and news, and just spending quality time together. And come to think about it, I get to hear a few war stories, too... -
MJ...the greatest ever?
Posted Tuesday, September 1, 2009, at 12:47 PM10Michael Jackson is the single greatest solo entertainer of all time. For a moment, let's forget all the publicized controversy that surrounded Jackson's life even up until the King of Pop died June 25 after suffering a cardiac arrest -- the skin bleaching talk, the changing faces, the odd public behavior, the child molestation allegations... -
AC/DC or freeze!
Posted Friday, January 30, 2009, at 3:37 PMAs I trudged up to the top of the icy hill and looked over it, I started to wonder if this was all worth it. The temperature stood at about 15 degrees, the frigid wind blasting me in the face, the slippery ground seemingly sliding beneath my feet. Then I saw the lights of the BOK Center ahead and thousands of screaming fans clamoring to get inside, not only to get away from the freezing cold weather, but to see one of the greatest rock and roll bands in history - AC/DC. ... -
Fave Christmas movies??
Posted Monday, December 22, 2008, at 10:05 PM3It's the time of year again for nestling all snug in our beds while visions of expensive holiday gifts and mad, last-minute dashes to the crowded department store dance through our heads. So while you're snuggling up with your significant other or spouse, getting together with the whole family this holiday season, or just going it alone, make sure to take a break to check out one or all of the following classic Christmas movies -- films that are sure to warm your heart and put a smile on your face. ... -
They're Back?
Posted Monday, September 29, 2008, at 2:23 PM1I'm not going to jump to conclusions and say that the Kansas City Chiefs will win their next 8-10 games and make a run at the playoffs. I'm not even going to say that the Chiefs will "manage to win a few more games this year and finish the season as a much stronger team than last year's version." Although I actually hope I'm able to say both of those statements are true by season's end... -
The Halloween Blog
Posted Friday, September 26, 2008, at 4:08 PM1I like Halloween. For the last several years, I haven't really got into the holiday that much. My wife is an avid fan of Halloween (she likes to decorate the house and office with Halloween-themed colors and such) and has been for a long time. It's her favorite holiday... -
Idol Chatter
Posted Thursday, April 24, 2008, at 10:55 AM6Alright, I admit it. I'm a fan of American Idol. This year, the hit FOX television series, which draws millions of viewers each week, has turned out one of the most talented group of singers and performers to grace the stage since the show began seven years ago. The group of contestants was recently narrowed down to the final five singers and so I am going to give a brief rundown on each and what I believe their chances are of becoming the next American Idol... -
Home Sweet Home
Posted Friday, January 11, 2008, at 3:07 PM3Fort Scott is my home. I've lived here for nearly 30 years. I grew up here with my family, and now I have been married for nearly 10 years and I am raising a family of my own in the same town. I went to elementary school, middle school, high school, and even college here. I've worked here since I was 14 years old. While we could have moved somewhere else after we got married, my wife (who is from Missouri) and I decided to live here... -
Driver's Ed
Posted Thursday, December 20, 2007, at 11:06 AM3OK, I've been quiet long enough about some of these things, so I think it's time to let them out. Myself, just like many other people, have to get out in their vehicle each day and brave the madness that is bad drivers. We all see them every day, in fact some of us ARE those people, so it probably wouldn't hurt for some of us to sit back and maybe re-think many of the driving practices we use on a daily basis... -
The Night HE Came to Fort Scott
Posted Thursday, November 1, 2007, at 11:39 AM1October 31, 2007. Halloween night. It was a night that I had never experienced before, nor will I ever forget. I had heard all the rumors leading up to that fateful evening. The famed masked psychopath known as Michael Myers was possibly coming to Fort Scott on Halloween, reportedly to search for a long-lost relative... -
The Tooth Hurts
Posted Monday, September 17, 2007, at 12:22 PM3Is there possibly a more stressful yet somehow strangely satisfying time for a parent than when a child loses a tooth? A few days ago, one of our 8-year old son's lower front teeth had become loose, and grew increasingly looser with each passing day... -
Chief Concerns
Posted Friday, August 17, 2007, at 12:11 PM1I can't hold it back any longer. I'm a disgruntled Kansas City Chiefs fan. I know it's only early in the preseason and the Chiefs, who are now 0-2 after a 11-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins Thursday night in K.C., are trying to figure out which players are ultimately going to make the team's final roster, while dealing with a quarterback controversy and a running back holdout issue that are so dramatic, you would think HBO might have filmed a documentary on the events unfolding this season with the team.. ... -
Madame President??
Posted Wednesday, August 8, 2007, at 10:53 AM15OK, I know I'm going to hear about this one from people of all party affiliations, but could this be a term that the American public hears quite a bit starting next year? Hey, it could be a reality soon. It's getting closer to time for the 2008 Presidential race to start heating up, and our current Commander in Chief of the World is nearing the end of his term. ... -
Happy Customer
Posted Tuesday, May 22, 2007, at 1:30 PM2I wanted to comment on a recent pleasant bit of customer service I experienced last weekend. Being an entertainment lover, I often find myself down at the local video rental store to check out the latest video game releases (for either myself or my son, who is also an avid video game player). My family and I headed out to Family Video, where we recently got a membership, to check out what the store had in stock, and since we hadn't gotten familiar with how the store operates yet... -
A Bright Spot
Posted Thursday, May 10, 2007, at 1:05 PMNow I know that in my last blog, I wrote about the amount of negativity that surrounds us everyday and what we can possibly do to make things right, or at least a little better. So I decided that now, I'm going to write about a recent bright spot I discovered in today's often confusing and downtrodden society... -
Find the Laughter
Posted Tuesday, May 8, 2007, at 12:11 PM1Walk outside your door any day of the week and you're going to get hit with it. Violence, in the form of suicides, homicides, mass shootings, drive-by shootings, beatings, rapes, stabbings, clubbings, etc. Death, destruction, sadness, grief, verbal abuse, physical abuse, domestic violence, sexual assault, molestations, the list goes on and on. You'll find it on television, in newspapers, and on the radio... -
Maybe Take the Bus
Posted Tuesday, April 24, 2007, at 9:52 AM1There aren't many things going on right now to keep us drivers happy. The once-again skyrocketing gasoline prices, an increasing number of accidents and fatalities on our roads and highways, and high vehicle property taxes in our state, just to name a few... -
For Love of the Game
Posted Friday, April 6, 2007, at 12:15 PMAs a long-time baseball fan, I want to remember some of the sport's better moments. Mark McGwire's then record-setting 70th home run in 1998. Nolan Ryan's seventh no-hitter in 1991. Cal Ripken's untouchable consecutive games streak from 1981 to 2001. George Brett joining the 3,000 hit club in 1992. These, and countless other memorable moments are what, in my opinion, baseball should best be remembered for...
