IOLA -- Shania Harper won girls' javelin here Thursday at the Crest Invitational. Harper won the event with an effort of 99 feet, 8 inches. The runner-up, Daisy Miller of Pleasanton, finished exactly 12 feet behind. Harper also won a third-place medal in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5 minutes, 58 seconds and finished fifth in the 800 in 2:45...

Fort Scott Community College sophomore shortstop Lizzie Aller was named to the Honorable Mention list on the All-Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division softball team recently. Aller was the only Greyhound chosen to the squad. Aller batted .409 this season in 53 games as the Greyhounds' leadoff batter. ...

Uniontown's softball team won its first four games this week prior to Thursday's scheduled doubleheader at Humboldt. The Eagles began the week by sweeping a make-up Three Rivers League doubleheader at Marmaton Valley, 17-0 and 13-2. HUMBOLDT -- Uniontown's baseball team dropped both games of a non-league doubleheader to Humboldt here Thursday evening. The Cubs, ranked No. 4 in Class 3A by the Kansas Association of Baseball Coaches, won the opener 9-0 and the second game 12-2. Uniontown fell to 6-9 on the season and has lost six straight games...

Nick Reynolds led Uniontown's varsity golf team with a fifth-place 85 as the Eagles hosted their home golf tournament at Woodland Hills Golf Course Thursday afternoon. The Eagles finished fifth as a team. "Nick put together his personal best round," Uniontown head coach Jason Tourtillott said. ...

During the Bourbon County Commission meeting Friday morning, County Treasurer Rhonda Dunn reported to commissioners the results of a required quarterly statement of county funds. The line-item report provided an overview of balances, receipts, disbursements, and ending balances for every fund in which the treasurer's office is responsible for. According to Dunn, the report essentially details the balances within those funds. Dunn said the quarterly report ran through the end of April...

Norman Lee Shaw, age 93, a resident of the Medicalodge of Fort Scott, Kan., died Thursday, May 8, 2014, at the Fort Scott Mercy Hospital. Ernest (Ernie) Bernard Hall, Jr., M.D. was born on September 12, 1953, in Parsons, Kan.
