To the Editor: What's good for the goose is said to be good for the gander. It seems not quite right for the Bourbon County Commissioners to demand that our Amish sisters and brothers do something the commissioners are unwilling or unable to do. Last time I looked, there were only outhouses at Elm Creek Lake. Have the commissioners recently installed running water and flush toilets out there? Until that happens, is it fair to demand that the Amish violate their principles?...

Sheltered workshop

I dislike the words sheltered workshop immensely. It conjures up images of the early 20th century when people were worked to death for low wages in horrible conditions, similar to the modern day sweatshops in Mexico and China. The problem I have with the term is that it was used in the 1980s and 1990s to describe day service programs for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. ...

It has now been six weeks since we moved and it is beginning to look and feel like "home." I finally have hung most of my pictures and so it is really taking on the feel of home. I still have five boxes in the house that haven't been opened or put away. But hopefully this week that chore will finally be done. There are numerous boxes out in our garage, but I will do those as I feel like it...

David Lee Bohlken, 33, Pleasanton, was arrested by the Bourbon County Sheriff's Office at 3:30 p.m. Friday on a Bourbon County warrant. He is still being held at this time with no bond. Edwin Eugene Murphy, 38, Gardner, was arrested by the Kansas Highway Patrol at 3:05 p.m. Saturday for driving while suspended and on a warrant out of Johnson County. Larry "Earl" Maloney and Janice Leann Tremain were married at 5 p.m. on June 7, 1962, in Fort Scott, Kan., by Mr. Waters, Justice of Peace. Earl and Janice were born and raised in Iola. They moved to Colorado with their son Ricky in 1970. Earl was a construction superintendent for 33 years while Janice worked in the health care field before they both retired in 2003. They soon moved to a farm in Fort Scott, where they will live out the rest of their lives...
