One might think that the title of this column is a contradiction of words, but it is not. During the Civil War there was a certain civility in the correspondence that described the "barbarous warfare" that was conducted by both the Union and Confederate forces. This and the command of the English language were especially evident in the letters between the Union and Confederate "generals."...

The Bronson Ruritan held its regular meeting Monday, Jan. 23, at the Bronson Community Center. There were 16 members and four guests present. Julia Rhoton led the group in the song "America." The invocation was given by Geraldine Reeder. The guest speaker, Bradley Stewart, spoke about his three deployments with the U.S. Army (military police) and thanked the citizens for their support of the military. Lawrence Russell Wright, 86, of Liberty, Mo., formerly of Uniontown, Kan., passed away Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012. Treeman Kenyon Wesley, 30, Joplin, Mo., was arrested at 10:03 p.m. Wednesday by the Kansas Highway Patrol for possession of marijuana. He posted a $1,250 bond at 11:22 p.m. Wednesday and was released. Bradley Allen McClellan, 34, Joplin, Mo., was arrested by the Fort Scott Police Department at 11:46 p.m. Wednesday for felony burglary and felony theft. He is still being held at this time...

Carolyn S. Ewing, 68, Fort Scott, formerly of Nevada, Mo., passed away on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2012, at her home in Fort Scott. Family information will be announced later. Just three short years ago two Fort Scott Community College teammates were enjoying an incredible run playing Saturdays at Frary Field, helping to qualify the Greyhounds for the Heart of Texas Bowl, which FSCC won with a victory over Blinn. Now Pro-Bowler Jason Pierre-Paul and NFL rookie Jacquian Williams find themselves headed to Super Bowl XLVI, which will be held in Indianapolis February 5...

JOPLIN, Mo. -- For a city stripped bare of so many trees, the rows and rows of saplings -- more than 470 in all -- with their plastic tags flapping in the wind are a hopeful sight.
