Social Security office to cut hours to save money

Strong winds cause damage in rural areas

While some residents of Bourbon County saw little precipitation over the weekend, a portion of rural Bourbon County got much more than rain on Sunday. Bourbon County Emergency Manager Keith Jeffers said Monday that a microburst hit a rural area of the county between 5 and 5:30 p.m. Sunday causing damage to power poles, trees, and even destroying one home. As with many microbursts, Jeffers said, the storm "didn't give much of an indication of warnings."...

The 2011 Kansas Cal Ripken State 9-Year-Old Baseball Tournament ended Monday afternoon without really ending. The flash downpour that hit Fort Scott at about 3:15 Monday afternoon left Don Hewett Field too muddy to resume play. And with the tournament champion and its runner up both required to be in Yankton, S. Dak., for the Midwest Plains Regional Tournament Wednesday afternoon, it was deemed impractical to return to play out the tournament today...
