The Uniontown High School Eagle boys faced some hurdles in a 52-39 win over Jayhawk-Linn High School in the first round of Class 2A Sub-State Tuesday in Pleasanton.

In the win over the No. 7 seeded Jayhawks (5-16), the No. 2 seeded Eagles (14-7) advanced to a semifinal matchup with No. 3 seeded Pleasanton High School (13-8) at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Pleasanton edged Prairie Village-Kansas City Christian High School (5-16) 59-56 on Tuesday.

“We faced a scrappy Jayhawk-Linn team in the first round of Sub-State,” Eagle Head Coach Chad Hays said. “We had some guys under the weather and had to fight through some fatigue issues. But we made some runs when we needed to and held off a late run by them to win by double digits.”

The Eagles had four players reach double digits in scoring – Dredyn Marlow with 14 points and three steals; Brycen Stewart with 14 points and eight rebounds; Colter Powell with 12 points, seven boards and three assists; and Byron Fry with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The Eagles shot 39.3% from the field.

“We didn’t have a great night shooting the ball but the difference in the game was in the paint,” Hays said. “We outscored them 40-22 in the paint, had 19 second-chance points and out-rebounded them 35-23.”

“We have a big challenge ahead of us as we prepare to take on Pleasanton on Friday.”

With a win against Pleasanton, the Eagles would advance to the Sub-State championship game against either No. 1 seeded Lyndon High School (21-0) or No. 4 seeded Richmond-Central Heights High School (12-9) at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
