Fort Scott High’s volleyball team defeated Columbus in the first match of a non-league quadrangular at the FSHS gymnasium Thursday evening, but fell to Pittsburg and Girard in their other two matches.

The Tigers swept Columbus, 25-12, 25-10. They lost to the Purple Dragons, 25-10, 25-14, and to Girard in three sets, 20-25, 25-23, 27-25. In the other matches, Pittsburg beat Columbus, 25-6, 25-6, and Girard, 25-18, 25-10. Girard downed Columbus, 25-10, 25-18.

Fort Scott is now 9-16 on the season but have gone just 3-11 since September 15, the last time the Tigers had both Abby Humble and Hunter Adamson in the lineup. Both have missed time since then with injuries.

Fort Scott is still working out some of the adjustments they’ve had to make but had a strong stretch in the middle of the first set versus Columbus (2-22). After leading just 6-4, the Tigers scored the next 4 points on kills, three of them by Addi Lyons.

A kill by Montana LaRoche, who then served back-to-back aces, and a Brooklyn Sheehy kill made it 20-9. Fort Scott scored the last four points of the set as well.

The Tigers scored 14 of the first 14 points of the second set and the Titans never got closer than 10 points the rest of the set.

Lyons finished the match with 9 kills while Sheehy had 4. LaRoche handed out 17 assists and served 3 aces. Tacy Holston also served 3 aces and Jocie Allen came up with 7 digs.

The Tigers than faced Southeast Kansas League co-leader Pittsburg (17-9) for the second time this season, both times at home. The first set was tight early before the Dragons went on a 13-0 run to go ahead 17-5. A similar run in the second set, this one of 11-1, made it 14-4.

Kenady Poyner had 3 kills to lead the Tigers. Emma Martin dished 4 assists. Allen had 6 digs.

Finally, the Tigers battled Girard (12-17) for the second time in a week, both matches also taking place at home. On September 20, the Tigers swept in a pair of close decisions, 25-23 and 25-22.

In the first set of this match, there were two ties and one lead change — the latter a sort of deceiving stat as that change came very early in the set.

Girard tied it once at 8-8 after scoring 4 in a row and again at 14-14 after scoring 3 straight. A net serve gave the Tigers the lead for good but the Trojans were by no means out of it.

Girard managed to stay within a point or two until the very end. An error gave the serve back to Fort Scott at 23-20 and Girard misplayed the next ball. An ace by Allen closed out the set.

The second set saw four lead changes and eight ties. The largest lead at any point was 3 when Girard held 18-15 and 19-16 leads.

The Tigers had a 6-1 run to take their last lead at 22-20. Allen got a kill when a ball she played just to get it over the net landed amongst three Trojans. A dig by LaRoche went over the net and fell in for the 21st point and a Brooklyn Sheehy kill off a free ball at the net was the 22nd.

Girard scored the next 3 before a Sheehy kill down the middle tied the set for the final time at 23-23. Two kills, the last by Bre Snyder, gave the Trojans the win.

The Tigers appeared ready to run away with the third set, going out to an 8-2 lead. The Trojans rallied to get within 11-9 and from that point on, the set was a dogfight.

The Tigers had a 4-point lead at 18-14 but Girard came back to tie it at 20-20. There were also ties at 21-21 and 23-24 before the Trojans took their first lead on an ace by Abby Smith, the second of two such serves in a row.

An error by Girard tied the set again and the Tigers took the lead on a Lyons kill, 25-24.

Brittney Bailey made a kill for Girard to tie the set for the last time. A block gave the Trojans the lead and another Bailey kill gave them the set and the match.

Lyons had 9 kills for the Tigers while Sheehy finished with 8. LaRoche delivered 21 assists while Martin dealt out 7. LaRoche also served 3 aces while Allen served 2 and also had 10 digs.

Tuesday, the Tigers were in Altamont playing Labette County and Parsons in Southeast Kansas League matches. The Tigers lost both, falling to LCHS in two sets, 28-26, 25-20, and Parsons in three, 17-25, 25-21, 25-22 to fall to 1-5 in league play. Fort Scott is in sixth place in the SEK between Parsons (2-4, 4-15) in fifth and Coffeyville (0-6, 2-17) in last. Labette County also beat Parsons to improve to 3-3, 10-12, good for fourth place.

The Tigers are at home against Coffeyville and Independence Tuesday as the second round through the SEK schedule begins. Labette County will also be present but is scheduled to play only Coffeyville and Indy. Action begins at 5 p.m.
