’Hound women split in Kansas City classic

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A Fort Scott Community College women’s basketball team dealing with the injury bug split games in the Kansas City Kansas Keith Lindsay Classic here over the weekend. The Greyhounds (2-3) lost to Penn Valley on Friday in overtime, 75-74. They defeated the William Woods junior varsity on Saturday, 81-76.

The Greyhounds defeated Penn Valley earlier this season in the Johnson County Classic on November 4, 81-69. The Scouts (1-4) picked up their first win of the season by outscoring the ’Hounds 19-16 in the fourth quarter and 5-4 in overtime.

Octavia Lowery led Penn Valley with 31 points on 10-of-17 field-goal shooting. She was the only Scout in double figures and also had 9 rebounds.

Ally McKenzie and Arkiarra Clark each scored 15 points to lead Fort Scott. Cameron Wilson added 11.

The Scouts won even though they had mostly worse team stats. They shot just 35 percent from the field, making 23 of 65 field-goal attempts, while Fort Scott shot 45 percent on 26 of 58. The Greyhounds outrebounded the Scouts, 46-36 and had more assists. But Penn Valley forced 26 turnovers and made 24 of 32 free-throw tries.

Fort Scott jumped out to a 29-14 lead after one period on Saturday and held on to beat William Woods, which won the fourth quarter 31-22.

McKenzie led the ’Hounds with 22 points as she made 7 of 10 shots from the field. She was also 7 of 8 at the free-throw line. Jade Winter, in the starting lineup for the injured Shanessia Walters, added 13 points while Clark and Jade Perry each scored 11.

McKenzie and Sarah Kelly had 6 rebounds each as Fort Scott dominated the boards, 38-29.

Jenny Hugins led William Woods with 18 points followed by Brasia Solid with 14 and Ranika Guyton with 13.

Fort Scott plays on the road against the Sterling College JV this afternoon. This weekend, the Greyhounds will host the Gladbach Classic at Arnold Arena. They face the Bacone JV at 6 p.m. Friday night and take on Cottey College at 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon.
