Tiger baseball splits at Independence
INDEPENDENCE — Fort Scott High School’s baseball team had to settle for a split in Southeast Kansas League play here Tuesday after Independence won the second game of the doubleheader in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Tigers won the opener, 7-2, but lost the nightcap, 9-8.
Jarrett Lyon (1-3) held the Bulldogs to one earned run on one hit and 2 walks in the opener while striking out 8.
The Tigers (3-3 SEK, 4-6 overall) broke a 1-1 tie in the third when Jeron Poyner’s line-drive single to center scored Grant Goldston. Fort Scott added 3 in the fifth and 2 in the seventh.
Poyner and Gunnar Brown each had 2 hits for the Tigers. Matt Campbell drove in 2 runs.
Altough Fort Scott held a 6-0 lead after 2 1/2 innings of the second game, Independence (3-1, 4-3) was able to rally and tied the score at 7-7 after five innings.
The Tigers reclaimed the lead when Alec Michaud led off the top of the sixth with a triple and scored on a wild pitch.
Josh Pralle, who had hit a 3-run home run in the third to get Indy’s bats going, drove in the tying and winning runs on a double to center field with 2 out in the seventh. Pralle was 3 for 5 for the Bulldogs with 5 runs batted in.
Alec Michaud was 3 for 3 for the Tigers while Connor Masters and Marcus Jamison were each 2 for 3.
The Tigers will host Paola in a non-league twinbill Monday at 4:30 at Dave Regan Stadium/LaRoche Baseball Complex.
