Tiger girls to play for third, boys for fifth

Saturday, January 21, 2017

FRONTENAC -- Fort Scott High's girls will play for third place in the Kansas National Guard Invitational here this afternoon and the boys will go for fifth place early this evening.

Tiger girls (4-6), seeded sixth, upset a Neosho team that already had double-digit wins this season in Thursday's first round before falling to second-seeded Piedmont, Okla., Friday. Fort Scott will face fourth-seeded Blue Valley Southwest (5-6) at 1 p.m. this afternoon in the new gymnasium for third place.

Fort Scott's boys (3-7) lost to second-seeded Pacific, Mo., Thursday night, 65-50, but bounced back for a 57-48 win over Wichita Independent in Friday's consolation semifinal. The Tigers will play Webb City, Mo. (5-6) for fifth in the old gym tonight at 6:30.

The top seeds advance to the championship in both brackets. Piedmont will face No. 1 Oklahoma City-Classen this evening at 5 in a game featuring teams with a combined record of 26-1). Top-seeded Nevada boys (10-3) will face Piedmont tonight at 6:30. Both games will be held in the new gym.

Thursday girls: Fort Scott 49, Neosho 48.

Jenny Denton's Hail Mary 3-pointer -- her first successful triple of the season -- gave Fort Scott's girls a first-round upset of No. 3 seed Neosho.

The Tigers had several stretched where they got out to fairly wide leads -- 5 points in the first period, 6 during the second, 10 in the third and 5 again in the fourth -- only to see Neosho catch up each time.

The Tigers held a 44-39 lead with about five minutes left in the game. But Neosho again caught up and took a 46-45 lead on Allison Burr's 3-pointer with just over two minutes left.

Hayley Denton tied the score with a free throw with 1:17 left. Hays put the Wildcats in front again, 48-46, with nine seconds left.

After a time out, Dwyer got in some trouble as she was looking to get the ball upcourt but spotted Denton, who launched her winning shot at the buzzer.

Madison Cook led the Tigers with 17 points while Brown added 11. Hays led Neosho with 16 points.

Thursday boys: Pacific 65, Fort Scott 50.

The Tigers held a 13-10 lead after one period of play. Alec Michaud, making his first start, scored 5 points in the period as did Grant Goldston.

But once Cameron Vanleer got going for Pacific (8-4), the Indians took control and never relinquished it. Vanleer scored the first 11 points of a half-ending 13-3 run for Pacific that turned a 2-point lead into a 36-24 advantage.

Vanleer finished with 18 points for Pacific, all of them scored after the three-minute mark of the second quarter. Tom Hennesey added 17, 10 of those coming in the second.

Jesse Jones led the Tigers with 19 points followed by Michaud with 13.

Friday girls: Piedmont 62, Fort Scott 47.

The Tigers were down by 10 points midway through the second quarter but fought back to get within 40-39 with 45 seconds left in the third.

McKenna Kirkpatrick hit a 3-pointer for the Wildcats to make it a 4-point lead going into the fourth and then put in another to start the fourth. Maddie Young and Maddie Sperle scored back-to-back to stretch the lead to 50-39.

Kharsyn Dwyer had her high-point game of the season, putting in 12 points for the Tigers. Skyelar Brown, Jenny Denton and Madison Cook each added 10. Sperle led Piedmont with 18 points and Kirkpatrick added 17.

Fort Scott was down 24-14 after Sperle scored consecutive baskets to cap a Wildcat run in the second quarter. The Tigers rallied with Dwyer's basket with less than 10 seconds left closing the deficit to 28-25 at the half.

Brown hit a 3-pointer with about a minute to go in the third and Kelsie Nelson made one of two free throws with 45 seconds left in the third to bring the Tigers within 40-39.

Friday boys: Fort Scott 57, Wichita Independent 48.

Grant Goldston found Jordan Hall for a layup with 20 seconds left in the opening stanza to put the Tigers ahead 10-8. Although Independent would tie the game twice in the second quarter, Fort Scott never trailed again.

Independent tied the score 22-22 early in the third when Paul Allen scored. But the Tigers dominated the rest of the period, outscoring the Panthers 16-6 the rest of the way. Fort Scott scored 10 of the last 13 of the period to go into the fourth with a 38-28 lead.

Independent fought back and got within 2 points, 49-47, when Waylon Chase scored with just over a minute to go. But the Tigers held the Panthers to a single point the rest of the way. Jones scored with just over a minute to go and then Fort Scott made 6 of 8 free throws in the final minute.

Jones led the Tigers with 20 points, his third game with at least 20 points in his last four outings. Jessie Lawrence added 13 and Goldston finished with 11.

Allen and Tanner Smith each scored 11 points for Independent.
