Greyhounds coast to win over Tritons

FORT DODGE, Iowa --Fort Scott Community College's football team continued its season pattern with a 51-7 win over Iowa Central here Sunday.

The Greyhounds are now 3-3 but have not won or lost consecutive games this season. Iowa Central fell to 0-6 for the season and is on a 10-game losing streak.

The Greyhounds scored their most points since a 53-36 win at Arkansas Baptist in the final game of the 2013 season. They had 17 of Sunday's points in the first quarter with a pair of Nathan Rourke-to-Chris Claybrooks touchdown connections. The first came from 38 yards out, the second from 7. Brody Southwell, a 2015 Fort Scott High graduate, added the first of three field goals with 13 seconds left, this from 32 yards out.

The Tritons' only score came at the start of the second quarter on a 3-yard pass from Paul Campbell to Roddrick Bryant. Southwell extended the Greyhound lead to 20-7 with a 42-yard field goal with 6:40 on the clock and Rourke scrambled for a 3-yard touchdown with 13 seconds to go.

Fort Scott began the second half with a pair of defensive scores. First, Lane Moran returned a Triton fumble 24 yards to the house just 12 seconds into the third quarter. Then just over two minutes later, Quinton Jordan returned an interception 20 yards, making it 41-7 with 12:28 on the clock.

Harry Trotter's 1-yard touchdown run with 4:50 left in the third made it 48-7. Southwell kicked a 28-yard field goal to cap the scoring with 5:12 remaining in the game.

Fort Scott outgained Iowa Central 381 yards to 164. Both teams had their struggles in the running game. The Tritons finished with a negative total, minus-16 yards, on 27 carries. The Greyhounds ran for 127 yards but needed 58 carries to get that, an average of only 2.2 yards per carry.

Rourke completed 18 of 23 passes for 236 yards. Claybrooks caught 7 of them for 82 yards.

The defense allowed only 11 first downs and an average of 2.1 yards per play on 78 plays. Dominic Cizauskas had 10 total tackles, including 7 solos. Reggie Howard was credited with 2 1/2 sacks for 16 yards in losses and 3 1/2 other tackles for a loss for 17 yards. The Greyhounds were credited with four sacks and 15 tackles for a loss.

Saturday, the 'Hounds return to Jayhawk Conference play when No. 20 Dodge City visits Frary Field for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
