FSCC women open region play with win

SALINA --Fort Scott Community College's women got off to a good start in Region VI play here Wednesday night, defeating Brown Mackie, 62-50,

Fort Scott's men were outscored 11-3 in overtime in a 78-70 loss to Brown Mackie.

These games were not conference games but Jayhawk Conference Division II teams are required to play home-and-home series with independents Brown Mackie and Hesston for post-season tournament seeding purposes. Outside of Labette playing Hesston, the rest of the division began conference play Wednesday night.

Fort Scott's women (9-8) outscored Brown Mackie 17-6 in the second quarter to take a 30-19 lead at the half. Although the Lions (6-10) kept pace in the second half, the Greyhounds didn't let them overcome that deficit.

Alexis Byrnes led the 'Hounds with 19 points. No other statistics were available for the Greyhounds at press time.

Brown Mackie men 78, Fort Scott 77, OT.

Fort Scott (4-13) lost for the fourth consecutive time and the sixth time in its last eight games. The 'Hounds led 41-39 at the half after making 60 percent of their field-goal attempts in the first half. They were leading 61-52 with 8:55 left in the game.

Brown Mackie tied the game at 67-67 on a 3-point goal by Chad Mordecai. The Lions scored the last 5 points of regulation and the first 7 of the overtime.

Fort Scott shot just 33 percent from the field in the second half.

Eddie Sims led Fort Scott with 20 points in his second game of the season. He's scored a total of 44 points in his two games. Marcus Allen added 18 points while Jeremiah Fleming scored 12.

Marcus George played his first game of the season for the 'Hounds, scoring 9 points.

Mordecai led Brown Mackie with 19 points followed by Sam Smith with 18 and Nygel Jones and Majak Wenyin with 14 each.

Fort Scott's teams will host non-conference and non-region games Saturday against Southeast (Neb.). The women tip off at 2 p.m. and the men follow at about 4 p.m. It will be the first home game for the women since December 12, ending a five-game road trip. The men will play a home game for the first time since November 23, concluding a seven-game road stand.

The men defeated Southeast on the road December 4. The women have not faced Southeast this season.
