FOOTBALL FRIDAY: District lead up for grabs

Friday, October 16, 2015

Uniontown clinched its first Three Rivers League football championship since 2011. This week, the Eagles go on the road to take on Marais des Cygnes Valley in a battle of the top two teams in Eight-Man Division I District 1, looking to get closer to a district championship for the first time since 2006, when the program was in Class 2-1A.

Uniontown (2-0 district, 6-0 overall) has not beaten Marais des Cygnes since joining the 11-man ranks in 2012. The Trojans (2-0, 4-2) defeated the Eagles, 37-36, at Uniontown last season and went on to win the district.

The Eagles finished as the district runner-up, qualifying for the playoffs but losing in the first round following a long Tuesday-night trip to Udall.

Marais des Cygnes has lost twice this season. The Trojans fell to state-ranked Burlingame on the road on Sept. 11, 62-14, and to Lyon County League rival Hartford, 68-52, at home on Sept. 25. Their district wins so far have both been on the road -- at Marmaton Valley, 56-6, and Waverly, 38-12, last week.

Uniontown has outscored its opponents this season, 326-42. That includes a 66-20 win over St. Paul in the district opener and a 56-8 blowout of Marmaton Valley last week that also served as the clincher for the TRL championship.

Game time in Melvern tonight is at 7 p.m.
