To the Editor:

Recently some local citizens appeared before the commissioners of Bourbon County and the city of Fort Scott as well as board members of school districts and the community college. They were asking that the taxing bodies limit their budgets to prevent any increase in their respective mill levies.

Those units of government were under even more financial pressure than the citizens because in addition to the fact that they are subject to the same high cost, they have to meet demand for services requested by the citizens, plus the cost of funding state and federal mandates.

However, they successfully responded to the request of the citizens. As you know, that is the form of government we have had. They listen to the citizens and respond and try not to dictate.

Now as of this time, we do not have a true democratic form of government. It is fast becoming a socialist government. We should do everything we can to keep this from happening, but it may be too late.

Along with a socialist government comes dictating or controlling every part of our lives -- a way of life that the people in this country are not used to and would find intolerable.

In the past, socialist governments were in many cases disguised as communism, Nazism and fascism and brought forth dictators such as Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini, Castro, Chavez and others.

What will be next for us?
