Tigers fight off Comets

Fort Scott's Tyler Adams (15) scores a layup over Chanute's Seb Fairchild (32) and Brock Gilmore late in the second quarter of Tuesday night's Class 4A Sub-State game at the FSHS gymnasium. Adams finished with 24 points for the Tigers in a 61-46 victory. (Kenny Felt/Special to the Tribune)

Fort Scott High's 61-46 victory over Chanute in the first round of the Louisburg Class 4A Sub-State Tournament was very similar to the game the teams played at the beginning of this month.

In Fort Scott's 68-55 victory over Chanute on Feb. 3, the teams combined to shoot 52 percent from the field, there were only 44 total rebounds, the Tigers committed 6 fewer turnovers than the Blue Comets and didn't take firm control of things until the third quarter.

Now, replace "52" with "48," "44" with "45," and keep the parts about the turnovers and the third quarter the same. That's how similarly Tuesday night's game played out.

"We knew it was going to be a tough match-up and it was," Fort Scott head coach Jeff DeLaTorre said. "They played extremely well. They battled us and played hard. It was very similar to the first time they played us. We were able to weather the storm and continue on in the third when we felt like we got some control."

One of the main differences for the top-seeded Tigers (16-5) was that Tyler Adams stepped up to hit six 3-pointers on his way to a 24-point night. The main difference for Chanute (3-18) was that Quinton Schooley, who scored 15 points in the earlier meeting, missed this game due to illness. Seb Fairchild did his best to make up for Schooley's absence, scoring 20 points, but it wasn't enough as no other Comet reached double figures.

Chanute led most of the first quarter, the last time at 15-14 with 52 seconds left on Brandon Bell's basket. But that was right in the middle of Fort Scott's 11-2 run to end the period with Adams' triple from the top of the key with 1.5 seconds left putting the Tigers up 20-15.

Chanute never led again, though the Comets got within one point with 3:51 left in the second with Fairchild's layup bringing them within 22-21.

Johnathan Stark's free throws with no time left on the clock put Fort Scott up by four, 29-25, at halftime.

Chanute got within 34-31 with 5:52 to go in the third. Cameron Woodring scored the next 4 points and Adams followed with back-to-back 3's.

Derek Sharp scored consecutive hoops to bring the Comets within 44-35 with 3:12 left. But Adams closed out the period with a transition layup and another triple. Chanute never got closer than 12 points again.

Woodring added 17 points for the Tigers despite waking up Tuesday morning with a sore back.

Fort Scott shot 50 percent from the floor, making 22 of 44 field-goal tries and went 8-of-12 at the free-throw line. Chanute shot 48 percent on 22 of 46 and never made it to the charity stripe.

Fort Scott will face No. 4 seed Anderson County Friday night at Louisburg. The Bulldogs (8-13) defeated Pioneer League rival Prairie View, 67-48, Tuesday night. This is another regular-season re-match as the Tigers defeated Anderson County, 67-45, on Dec. 13 in Fort Scott.
