Mother's rolls make impression on others, too

Following is a note I received from my sister-in-law Mike Miller from Severna Park, M.D., in regard to the column that I wrote last week (about my mother's clover leaf rolls).

I believe this story took place one time when we were on our way to Fort Scott, taking my mama home after her summer visit with us. We stopped at Bob's folks, who lived in Dixon, Ill., to visit and spend the night.

Bob's mom had a big picnic dinner out under their big oak trees, and Mike and her husband Al (Bob's brother) and their two daughters, Mary Beth and Carrie, were also there, as well as some other family members.

We had such a fun time seeing and visiting with everyone. When we arrived, my mama asked if Bob's mom would like her to bake some clover leaf rolls, and who would turn down my mama's homemade rolls?

From the following note from Mike, she watched the whole fascinating "roll making" from beginning to finish.

Marilyn,

Yes, I remember your mom's cooking and baking -- fantastic! Based on your mom's cooking, Marilyn, you could have had any man in the world. I remember her scraping out a dish while cooking, and I am thinking that she must have gotten every single molecule out of it.

I often think of her when I am scraping out a dish and think, "I'm being a bit wasteful -- Lila would have gotten another spoonful out of this before calling it quits."

By the time she was finished with a pot or a bowl, even a cat could not have found anything to lick out of it.

Love, Mike

Also mama would always invite whatever grandkid was near to "lick the bowl." As you can tell from Mike's note, there wasn't much left to lick.
