Tiger boys win LCHS title; Knopp wins three events

ALTAMONT -- The track and field season opened here Friday as Labette County High School continued its tradition of running its varsity and junior varsity meets on the same day.

Fort Scott's varsity boys won the team tite behind the triple-event-winning performance of senior Griffin Knopp. The Tigers finshed with 84 1/2 team points while second-place Chanute was 11 points behind.

Fort Scott's varsity girls finished in sixth place as Iola won the meet with exactly 100 points. Tiger JV girls finished third behind Chanute and Labette County while the JV boys placed sixth as three teams scored at least 115 points.

Knopp won the high jump -- in which he is the defending Class 4A State champion -- quite easily as he cleared 6 feet 6 inches. Brady Fink tied for second at 6' 2" and Cody Harper was fourth after clearing 5' 10".

Knopp also won triple jump with a mark of 40' 9", beating out the runner-up, Russell of Parsons, by 5 inches. Fink was third at 39' 4".

Knopp took the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 44.08 seconds. Bennett of Girard followed with a time of 44.50.

The Tigers had two other events with multiple medalists. Drew Bryant took second in shot put with an effort of 45' 1" while Cody McGehee was third at 42' 6". Fink took third in the 400 meters in 54.98 seconds with Dezmund Willard fourth in 55.44 and Josh Buller fifth in 56.08.

McGehee was also second in javelin with a throw of 153 feet even.

Zach Riley claimed fifth place in the discus with a mark of 113' 10" and the 4x100-meter relay team took sixth in 47.56 seconds.

Megan McDermed was one of two event winners for the varsity girls as she claimed javelin with an effort of 106 feet even, nearly 4 feet better than the runner-up, Clairborne of Fredonia.

Paige Denton was the other winner as she ran the 3,200 meters in 12 minutes, 43 seconds. She also took fourth in the 1,600 meters in 5:59.47.

Mallory Shelton picked up a pair of thirds. She cleared 5 feet even in high jump and 30' 6" in triple jump.

Marliss Allen rounds out the results with a sixth-place finish in the 400 meters in 1:08.72.

Katren Rienbolt won two events for the JV girls. She went 30' 9" in triple jump and ran the 300-meter hurdles in 53.71 seconds. She was also fourth in the high jump, clearing 3' 10".

Fort Scott's 4x800-meter relay team turned in a time of 12:43 in finishing second. Riki Buller was third in the 800 meters in 2:51.25 and Jillian Lattimer was third in shot put with a mark of 26' 2".

Karley Nelson finished fourth in javelin with an effort of 73 feet while Krista Hightower was sixth at 67' 8". Katrina Yakel was fifth in the 100 meters in 13.94 and the 200 in 39.24. Jessica Cox was fifth in discus at 64' 3 1/2" and sixth in shot put at 24' 2".

David Goff won the boys' JV shot put with a heave of 37' 5 1/2" while Nick Allen was third at 34' 8". Jash Pytlowany was third in the 400 meters in 59.75 and fifth in the 200 in 25.66. Race Kastl was fifth in the 100 meters in 12.39 and sixth in javelin at 94' 3".

The next varsity outing will be Friday at Paola with events begining at 3:30 p.m. The next JV meet will be April 11 at Chanute.
