To the Editor:

We the people must have entities such as a new swimming pool and (expansion of) Buck Run Community Center to entice new residents to the city of Fort Scott.

The reason for the new swimming pool is that it was built in 1936 -- 75 years ago. It is leaking, pipes are rusting, the light fixtures need to be replaced and the pumps are 25 years old and need to be replaced also.

The Buck Run Community Center, based on statistics, was used by 86,000 persons in 2010. There needs to be additional space for new programs. There are no showers, which need to be added to the program. I myself use the Buck Run Community Center on occasion, but do not use the swimming pool. I did use it in the 1940s and 1950s, and all my children benefited from using it. I hope that my great-grandchildren will be able to use it also.

I know no one likes the idea of new taxes, but in this situation, these two projects are needed. Based on facts, if you spend $100, it will cost 50 cents extra. That amounts to one cup of coffee or a Coke per week.

I believe the people of Fort Scott would benefit from these two programs and would appreciate your "Yes" vote on April 5, 2011.
