New players help JV tennis team

Fort Scott High's junior varsity tennis team hosted a tournament Monday with a few new players who have recently joined the team playing in their first event.

In round-robin play, both singles entrants won both their matches while both doubles teams were 0-2.

The tourney was scheduled to have five teams, but one school had to pull out in order to make up a varsity event while another failed to show.

Kalia Dancy won the No. 1 singles pool by beating Coffeyville's Callie McAskill, 6-0, and Chanute's Ashley Parrett, 6-3. She has won nine of her 11 matches in JV play this year.

Kelsie Hess won the No. 2 singles bracket with a 6-1 win over Coffeyville's Samantha Fraelich and a forfeit over Chanute.

Sammi Carr and Ashlyn Baugher played No. 1 doubles. They lost to Jordan Hayes/Boya Abudu of Coffeyville, 6-0, and Melissa Churning/Seana Lawrence of Chanute, 0-6. Baugher was playing her first matches.

Ashley Allen and Hether Hobbs played No. 2 doubles in the first action for both of them. They lost to Racheal Gillman/Haley Smith of Coffeyville, 6-3, and Rebecca Harman/Elizabeth Fehr of Chanute, 6-4.

"I was pleased with everyone's effort today," Fort Scott head coach Lynn Barr said. "We were winless in doubles, but these were all freshmen and three of them have only been out for a week. We kind of threw them into the fire pretty quick, but with only one more JV match on the schedule after ours, there wasn't much choice. The freshmen all gave a good effort and showed signs of beginning to know what they needed to do. Both singles players played good tennis today and neither one was seriously pushed in either match."

The last junior varsity matches are scheduled for Monday at Parsons. Play will begin there at 3 p.m.
