UNIONTOWN -- Uniontown's softball team assured itself of a second-place finish in the Three Rivers League in its first year of existence after beating Chetopa, 10-9, in the opening game of a doubleheader here Monday.

In the second game, a non-league contest, the Eagles took a 7-6 win, which means that that their first season will not end with a losing record.

The Eagles (4-1 TRL, 6-5 overall) had to hold off the Hornets in both games. In the opener, Uniontown held an 8-3 lead after four innings but Chetopa scored four in the top of the fifth. The Eagles answered with two in the sixth to make it 10-8 while the Hornets got one run in the top of the seventh.

Jessie Camac was two for four at the plate for Uniontown. Juliea Decker, Cassie Schwalm and Kyli Harvey each stole two bases. In all, the Eagles had 14 steals in the opener.

Allison Warren (5-4) allowed seven hits and three walks, hit one batter and struck out three in the win.

"Some timely hitting along with 15 walks and 14 stolen bases allowed us to win this game despite only getting four hits," Uniontown head coach Alan Shinn said.

Uniontown led the second game 7-3 after four innings. Chetopa scored one in the sixth and two in the seventh.

This game was very similar to the opener. The Eagles stole 16 bases while getting only five hits. Candice Clayton and Heather Schnichels each stole four while Schwalm, Diana Ayers, Jessie Camac and Audrey Dixon each stole two.

"Timely hitting with runners moving on stolen bases allowed us to score," Shinn said. "Chetopa actually out-hit us both games but we were able to outscore them."

Ithaca Marlier (1-0) got her first varsity win. She allowed three runs in eight hits and one walk over the first four innings. Warren got her first save as she finished up over the final three innings, allowing three hits, two walks, hitting one batter and striking out two.

It was the first sweep for the Eagles. It was also the last scheduled regular season outing before post-season play begins in the Yates Center Class 2A Regional Tournament, which will start on Monday.

The Eagle JV will make-up a doubleheader Thursday at home, weather permitting.
