Uniontown, Pleasanton girls winners

Friday, January 19, 2007

The girls' teams from Uniontown and Pleasanton each advanced in the Pleasanton Mid-Season Tournament here Thursday night while both school's boys lost.

Uniontown's girls defeated Humboldt, 44-34, in an imperfect late outing while Pleasanton's girls defeated Olathe Berean Christian, 60-47.

Uniontown's boys fell to Humboldt, 70-53, while Pleasanton lost to Berean Christian, 43-37.

Every team has to play twice on Saturday as the tournament staff had trouble obtaining officials in order to use tonight as a make-up date. Play begins at 9 a.m. with the placement rounds starting about 4 p.m.

Uniontown girls 44, Humboldt 34.

This game wasn't as close as the score would indicate as the Eagles, 5-3, held a 16-point lead going into the fourth quarter.

Uniontown took control of the game early in the second quarter as 10 unanswered points, which included a pair of Kylie Shepard three-point goals, gave the Eagles an 18-5 lead with 3:25 left in the first half.

Uniontown's lead was 25-12 at the half and another run, this one of 9-0, made it 36-14 with 4:36 to go in the third.

It wasn't the prettiest game as Uniontown shot only 30 percent from the field on 16 of 53 and didn't make a field goal in the fourth quarter. But Humboldt shot only 23 percent on 10 of 43 despite a seven-of-14 performance from Kelci Owens, who had 23 points for the Cubs.

Humboldt also had 31 turnovers, with 11 of them coming in the first quarter. They had 20 by halftime and Uniontown was able to take advantage of the Cubs' charity.

"We haven't played for, what, 10 days?" Uniontown head coach Ken Holt said. "But a win's a win. We played well at times, we couldn't make some shots when we needed to. I was happy with the defense for the most part."

Owens scored 11 of her points in the fourth quarter to help make it as close as it was. But her teammates combined for 11 points on three-of-29 field-goal shooting.

Carissa Fink led the Eagles with 10 points and nine rebounds. Shepard, Fink and Riley Stephens each had five steals.

Uniontown held a 47-37 rebounding advantage.

The Eagles play Crest at noon on Saturday in the south gymnasium.

NOTE -- Uniontown and Marmaton Valley have postponed Monday's make-up games once again. This is because the Southeast-Cherokee Lancer Classic, which Marmaton Valley is in, won't begin until today. Games will be played there tonight, Saturday and Sunday.

With a regularly-scheduled game on Tuesday, playing Monday meant Marmaton Valley would be playing five days in a row.

The doubleheader will be played Monday, Feb. 19. Even though these games will be played after the February 2 contests at Marmaton Valley, these will still be the league games because they were originally scheduled to be held first.

Pleasanton girls 60, Olathe Berean Christian 47.

Caitlyn Conrad's 29-point binge led the Blu-Jays, 5-4, while Megan Reach and Meghan Butler each scored 10.

The Jays trailed 19-16 after one period but outscored Berean Christian the rest of the way, 44-28.

Pleasanton will take on Kansas City Metro Academy at noon Saturday in the north gymnasium.

Kansas City (Mo.) Metro Academy girls 53, Prairie View 30.

Taber Spani, 6' 1" sophomore daughter of former Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Gary Spani -- who's also the head coach of the Metro Academy team -- scored 25 points in her team's victory.

Metro outscored Prairie View 13-3 in the first quarter.

Carissa Wendt led the Buffalos with 11 points.

Crest girls 62, Northeast-Arma 51.

Crest improved to 4-4 on the season.

Mindy Davied led Northeast with 14 points.

Humboldt boys 70, Uniontown 53.

Humboldt's 24-10 scoring advantage in the third period blew open what had been a relatively close game.

Uniontown, 3-5, trailed only 29-22 at the half. But the Cubs ran the floor better in the third and pulled away.

Humboldt held the Eagles without a field goal during a three-minute stretch in which it outscored Uniontown 14-2, making it a 49-28 game with 2:29 left in the third.

Chad Hays scored 20 points to lead Uniontown while Jesse Johnston added 15. Josh Honas paced Humboldt with 24 points, scoring 17 of them in the second hal. Trey Zartman added 12 points to the Cubs' total and Brent Frederick scored 10.

Uniontown will face Pleasanton Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. in the north gym.

Berean Christian boys 43, Pleasanton 37.

Jeff Renner's 17 points led the way for Berean Christian, which held a 12-6 lead after one period of play.

But the Blu-Jays, 1-8, led 23-18 at the half and were clinging to a 33-31 lead after three.

Berean Christian held Pleasanton to four points in the fourth quarter.
