Lois Lavon (Middleton) Cooney, age 89, a resident of Frontenac Medicalodge and formally of Fort Scott, Kan., left this world on Monday, Nov. 7, 2022. She was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister. Lois was born to Lee Charles and Allie (Peterson) Middleton on Feb. 3, 1933, in Pawnee, Kan. She graduated from Uniontown High School in 1951. She married Alvin D. Cooney on Nov. 25, 1953, at the Dry Ridge Baptist Church. He preceded her in death on April 4, 1974...

Joseph Gabriel O’Bryan, Jr., age 71, current resident of Overland Park, Kan., and formerly of Fort Scott, Kan., passed away peacefully at his home Sunday morning, Nov. 6, 2022, surrounded by his loved ones. Brian Scott McDaniel, age 49, a resident of Fort Scott, Kan., passed away unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 7, 2022, at the Via Christi Emergency Room in Fort Scott. He was born Dec. 14, 1972, in Ft Scott, the son of Darrell McDaniel and Linda Kay Dunlap McDaniel. ...

Bourbon County Commissioners have chosen not to implement a transient guest tax in the county, at least for now. On Tuesday, Nov. 1, commissioners discussed the matter with Chief Financial Officer Susan Bancroft and took no action. A sitting Bourbon County Commissioner will keep his seat after defeating his challenger by a wide margin in Tuesday’s general election, according to unofficial results from the Bourbon County Clerk’s Office. In the only contested race in Bourbon County, Republican Nelson Blythe, who was appointed to the District 1 commission seat in August, defeated his Democratic opponent Clinton Walker 1,198 votes to 357 votes. ...
