Joann Lewis, 89, of Independence, Mo., formerly of Fort Scott and Lawrence, Kan., passed away July 30, 2016 at her home. She was born Oct. 20, 1926 in El Dorado, Kan., to Harold and Eunice (Brant) Van Houten. She was united in marriage to Frank Reed Lewis who preceded her in death in 2003. She was a homemaker, and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Fort Scott and Lawrence, Kan. She was a member of the DAR, and enjoyed playing bridge with her friends...

A seller and her goat wait their turn as Auctioneer Lonnie Stripe of Humeston, Iowa, upper right, sells a goat being shown in the ring. Ron Dilley of Stillwater, Okla., upper left, was also an auctioneer for the sale. This is the first year the sale, which is in its third year under the Heartland name, has been held in Fort Scott. In past year, the sale was held in Oswego. Buyers and sellers were from Missouri, Oklahoma, Iowa and Kansas. About 105 goats were expected to go through the ring...

Patrons of the Fort Scott Public Library will soon have a new location to visit to check out their favorite titles and authors as a slate of improvements is on the horizon. The local library, 201 S. National Ave., is in the beginning stages of a move to a temporary smaller location in the basement of Memorial Hall, at 1 E. Third St., in a portion of the basement where the city water department used to be located...

Landon Simmons won the First Flight in a scramble tournament held at Woodland Hills Golf Course over the weekend. He shot a 63 to win the group and claim an $80 prize. Jon Kindelsparger and Chuck Scammell tied for second with scores of 65. A tie-breaker was used to award Kindelsparger second place and a $60 prize. Scammell received $30 for finishing third...

This year, "Lawnchair scrimmage" was a misnomer as Fort Scott High School's team worked out at Frary Field Saturday morning as some areas of the practice field are still sectioned off due to construction at the high school.
