Jerry Vincent Schasteen, age 68, a former resident of Fort Scott, Kan., passed away Aug. 15, 2015, at the Medicalodge of Nevada, Mo. He was born June 28, 1947, in Fort Scott, the son of Russell Vincent Schasteen and Alta Maye Hall Schasteen. He married Phyllis Carson on April 10, 1965, in Fort Scott. ...

Robert Gene (Bob) Morris, age 56, resident of Arcadia, Kan., died Friday, Aug. 14, 2015, at his home, and went to be with his parents. He was born Nov. 22, 1958, in Wichita, Kan., to William L. and Elizabeth M. Hall Morris. Robert worked at Bill's Coal Company until age 26 and Tower and Metal Products until his disability. ...

Donna Sue Watters Matkin-Smith, age 76, resident of Fort Scott, Kan., died Friday, Aug. 14, 2015, at Mercy Hospital. She was born May 12, 1939, in Fort Scott, the daughter of William D. "Pete" and Elsie Mae Sterling Watters. After high school, she graduated from Fort Scott Community College and attended Pittsburg State University for nursing. ...

Multiple agencies responded to a house fire Sunday evening south of Fort Scott. Delwin Mumbower, coordinator for Bourbon County Fire District No. 3, said fire departments responded just after 5:30 p.m. to a report of a structure fire in the 2100 area of Grand Road. Fire officials said the fire was electrical in nature and confined to an electric box inside the house...

Rose Good sings "When the Saints Go Marching In," a Del Potter favorite at the Del Potter Music Festival Sunday at St. John's Methodist Church. There was a full house Sunday for the annual festival. In addition to football, all other fall sports at Fort Scott High School held their first practices Monday. These sports are volleyball, soccer, cross-country, girls' golf and girls' tennis. Sixty-three players, including about 23 freshmen, reported for the first day of practice Monday morning at Fort Scott High School.
