In October 2014, Bourbon County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) was awarded with a Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness (HMEP) Grant in the amount of $8,000. Fort Scott USD 234 school buses and other district vehicles are ready for the roads when the school year begins. Kansas Highway Patrol troopers were in Fort Scott Friday to inspect district buses and other vehicles in preparation for the upcoming 2015-16 school year, which begins Aug. 27.
