Mildred Lee Lager, 78, of Fort Scott, Kan., passed away Sunday, Dec. 7, 2014 at St. Luke's South in Overland Park, Kan. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home.

Laura Lynn White, age 41, a resident of Chillicothe, Mo., passed away on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2014, at her residence. Laura was born the daughter of Harry Parker and Rev. Kathrine Jolly on Nov. 30, 1973, in Topeka, Kan. She was united in marriage to Scott White on Jan. 26, 2002, in Independence, Mo. He survives of the home. They made their home in Chillicothe in 2011, moving from Brookfield, Mo...

Joanna Aubel Johnson, 78, Hays, died Friday, Nov. 28, 2014 at Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. 
She was born March 3, 1936 in Uniontown, Kan., the daughter of Clifford and Addie (Swink) Typer. She was a real estate broker and owner of Aubel Realty. ...

The Bourbon County Register of Deeds office will be closed Wednesday to allow staff to attend training on upcoming fee changes. The fees to file mortgages will increase beginning Jan. 1 to comply with newly-passed state legislation. The staff training is being done because the office's computer system must be updated to accommodate the new fee schedule...

A district court judge sentenced a former Bourbon County Clerk's office employee to probation and 30 days in jail during a hearing Monday in Bourbon County District Court. District Court Judge Amy Harth sentenced 29-year-old Angela Timi, of Fort Scott, to serve a 30-day sentence in the Southeast Kansas Regional Correctional Center and a 12-month probationary period that begins this week. ...

The USD 234 Board of Education heard some good news Monday from a local auditor concerning the district's finances. Terry Sercer, of Diehl, Banwart and Bolton CPAs, appeared before board members to inform them a recent audit of the district's finances showed no violations of state or federal statutes. Sercer said the audit received an "unqualified opinion" from the firm, which is the "highest level of opinion you can get."...

CANEY -- Uniontown High School participated in its first-ever wrestling tournament, sending five wrestlers to Caney Valley's Kan-Okla Tournament. The highest-placing Eagle wasn't even counted in team points for Uniontown as John Emerson was one of many extra wrestlers from several schools who officially competed "unattached." Emerson finished sixth in the 152-pound weight class with a 3-2 record on the day. ...

OVERLAND PARK -- Johnson County swept Fort Scott Community College's basketball teams here in a Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division doubleheader. Opal Mae Gier, age 88, resident of Fort Scott, Kan., died Monday, Dec. 8, 2014, at her home. She was born Sept. 28, 1926, in Hepler, Kan., the daughter of Oscar and Lizzie Goff Gier. She grew up in the Walnut, Kan., area. After finishing school, she worked in Chanute, Kan. ...
