The LaRoche Baseball Complex currently under construction in the Fort Scott Industrial Park received a visit from its namesake Wednesday morning. Adam LaRoche, Fort Scott High School graduate and Major League Baseball player, stopped by the site where the 500-seat ballpark is being constructed to look at progress on the project and tour the site with another visitor to Fort Scott, Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins...

The face of Fort Scott, its downtown district, is seeing change. On Thursday, the Lowell Milken Center (LMC) celebrated the groundbreaking of a new facility directly across the street from its current office at Main and Wall Street. Norm Conard, executive director of the LMC, said in a later interview, "I could hear the hammers at the Scottish Rite in the background while people were speaking. Things are happening in Fort Scott."...

Jarmie Lee Winningham, age 37, resident of Miami, Okla., died, Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2014, as the result of an auto accident near Mildred, Kan. Funeral arrangements for Jarmie Winningham are incomplete.

Carla Marie Marshall, age 59, longtime resident of Fort Scott, Kan., and more recently of Springfield, Mo., died Saturday, Oct. 25, 2014 at her home in Springfield. She was born March 21, 1955 in Fort Scott, and was a graduate of Fort Scott High School and Fort Scott Community College. She married Gary Marshall on Jan. 11, 1975. He preceded her in death on Jan. 22, 2008...

Longtime U.S. Senator Bob Dole stopped in at Common Ground Coffee Company in Fort Scott Wednesday during what is being billed as perhaps his last state-wide tour. "I don't really have an agenda," Dole said. "I just want to say thank you to the people that have supported me over the years and gave me the opportunity to have the experience I had in Congress."...

The game between Fort Scott High and Paola in the final game of the 2014 regular season Friday night will be for playoff seeding. Both teams are assured of berths in the first-ever Class 4A-Division I playoffs, which begin a week from tonight. Seven years ago, Iowa Western didn't have a football program. By 2012, the Reivers were undefeated NJCAA National Champions, defeating Butler in the Graphic Edge Bowl in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The FS Junior volleyball club will hold tryouts at Buck Run Community Center, 735 Scott Ave., on November 9. There will be sessions for those 14 and under and another for those 15 to 18 years old. Fort Scott Community College's men's basketball team, coming off a Region VI championship, held a scrimmage and a meet and greet session with fans at Arnold Arena Thursday night. Every player in the FSCC program, including those who will be redshirted this season, played in the scrimmage, which ended with an 87-76 win for the "White" team over the "Black" team. ...

Fort Scott Community College's volleyball team set a school record when it defeated Allen on Sophomore Night at Arnold Arena Wednesday night. The Greyhounds' 25-18, 25-21, 25-15 sweep was their 30th victory of the season, breaking a record set during the late 1980s under then-coach Kerry Messersmith, who is now the head coach at NCAA Division I Alabama-Birmingham...
