On Friday, the Relay for Life of Bourbon County organization will kick off its 2014 campaign to raise money in the continuing fight against cancer. Several activities have been planned for the kickoff event, scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Friday at the Holmtown Pub, 206 N. National Ave. This year's campaign will follow a superhero theme, "It's a community. It's a hope. It's a cure." Relay for Life events raise money for the American Cancer Society...

Fort Scott High School Homecoming activities will be held Feb. 10-15. The Pep Assembly will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 14. Coronation of the Homecoming Royalty will be at about 7:30 p.m., between the varsity games. The dance will be from 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 15 in the high school commons area...

While most people are hunkered down when a large snowstorm approaches, county and state crews are out to make roads passable. Working in shifts, they stay the course in sometimes dangerous conditions to spread roads with mixtures concocted to make the roadways safer in snow/ice build up conditions...

Ruth Elene Townsley, age 78, a former resident of Uniontown, Kan., and more recently of Fort Scott, Kan., went to be with the Lord early Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014, at the Fort Scott Manor. She was born July 17, 1935, in Fowler, Colo., the daughter of Edgar Henry Graham and Laura May Henrie Graham. ...
