'Epic journey' leads cancer survivor to Fort Scott

Fred Vlchek has been told he's on an epic journey. He's not sure he sees it that way, although he said he does feel what he's doing is special. "I tell them I'm just a schmuck from Cleveland, born and raised," Vlchek, a six-year cancer survivor, said. Sale was worth having, commissioners say

The consensus from the Bourbon County Commissioners on Friday is that the sale of property for delinquent taxes is worth the effort. While the Aug. 12 sale of 58 parcels did not generate a lot of income for the county -- $1,832 -- the sale prompted many to redeem their properties. In order to do so, those property owners had to pay all or a portion of their delinquent taxes, which generated $304,317.34. That total includes fees that were paid to the district court...

It's back to school time

Students in USD 234 Fort Scott returned to school Friday. There were 1,869 students in the district. The official count will be submitted to the state on Sept. 20.
