Mercy Hospice recently recognized the most recent group of individuals who have completed volunteer training. They included Christopher Mathews, Barbara McDaniel and James "Jim" Barrows. "We want to thank our volunteers for their commitment to comfort our hospice patients and their families," said LaShawn Miller, Mercy Hospice social worker and volunteer coordinator. The city of Fort Scott offices will be closed on Monday, Sept. 3, in observance of the Labor Day holiday. The offices will re-open Tuesday, Sept. 4. The rain gauge at the USDA Service Center in Fort Scott showed a total of 1.75 inches of rain over last weekend. That is the most rainfall -- and the first time we have received over one inch at a time -- since April 30. We actually did record over 5 inches on that late April day, but no significant accumulations had been recorded since then...

If producers thought last year's drought was bad, this year's has not proven better. Weather has not been favorable for agricultural production recently, but that might be changing. Gabriel weighed 7 pounds, 1 1/2 ounces and measured 20 1/2 inches in length at birth...

Citizens Bank recently announced the promotion of Kellye Barrows to the position of assistant vice president. Barrows was recently named the customer experience manager for the bank, a news release said. Barrows joined Citizens Bank in 2006 as a marketing assistant. She holds a degree in marketing from Pittsburg State University. She is also active in the community as a member of the Good Ol' Days Committee...

Vicki Lynn Melson, 47, Fort Scott, was arrested at 1:38 a.m. Wednesday by the Fort Scott Police Department on a Fort Scott municipal warrant for driving while suspended and is still being held at this time. Kelly Michael Gould, 30, Fort Scott, was arrested at 7:56 a.m. Tuesday by the Fort Scott Police Department on a Kansas Department of Corrections warrant for parole violation and is still being held at this time...

Two Uniontown High School cheerleaders hope to be bound for the Big Apple this fall. UHS senior Brittany Tanner and sophomore Jana Wilkinson, both selected this year as All-American Cheerleaders by the National Cheerleading Association, are raising money to represent the region by performing in this year's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City...

Two major points of contention between USD 234 teachers and the Board of Education have been settled and teachers in the district should be receiving their 2012-2013 contracts in the mail soon. At issue in the more than six-month negotiations were lost steps on the teachers' salary schedule and additional insurance contributions for district educators...
