As the new year starts, it must be time for the Kansas City Sportshow and a trip to a Missouri lake for several Iowa anglers who work the show and have done so for many years. As usual, either before or during the Sportshow, snow is on the ground. Tom Nelson and Fred Anderson, Des Moines, Iowa, have found good fishing in one of the Missouri big impoundments for more than 20 years prior to the Sportshow and usually catch their largest bass of the entire year...

COFFEYVILLE -- Fort Scott Community College's women went 1-1 at the Jayhawk Conference Shootout here over the weekend while FSCC's men lost both games at the annual event. Fort Scott's women defeated Garden City, 60-58, Friday night but lost to Barton County in overtime, 77-73, Saturday. BONNER SPRINGS -- Six of the nine wrestlers Fort Scott High School head coach David Brown brought to the Dick Burns Mat Classic, hosted by Bonner Springs High School here Saturday. Denzell Davis won the 119-pound bracket while Dane Cummings finished second at 171. Tyler Sharp, Justin Sharp and Drew Bryant each had third-place finishes and Victor Hughes was fourth...

Area residents who have not yet received the vaccine that protects against the H1N1 influenza A virus should do so, according to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. Fort Scott Middle School is making one final push for votes this week in the U.S. Cellular Calling All Communities campaign which ends Friday. FSMS is partnering with local individuals and businesses to hopefully finish the contest with a voting surge. The school finished the month of December ranked No. 59 in national voting, and has an array of events lined up throughout the campaign's final week to fuel an attempt to become ranked among the contest's top 10 schools...

Only six months after being purchased, the Fort Scott Country Club and Golf Course could be for sale. Craigslist.com, a Web site created for online classified advertisements, lists an 18-hole golf course and hunting lodge for sale in Fort Scott. The ad lists the property and equipment for $925,000. The ad claims it to be a "Must Sell" and encourages buyers to "make offer owner wants to retire."...

The smoke alarm in the home of Mike and Rebecca Rhodes could possibly be what saved the lives of Mike and their 13-year-old daughter Sunday morning. At approximately 4 a.m. Sunday, Mike and his daughter were sleeping in their home on Margrave Street when their smoke alarm woke them up. ...
