Ethel Lucile (Baker) Mauck passed away on Aug. 30, 2009, in Pittsburg, Kan. She was born to Robert Louis and Stella Angeline (Hatcher) Baker on June 21, 1917, in Topeka, Kan. On Jan. 30, 1941, she married David Henry Peter Mauck. To this union were born five children...

Two musical groups of varying styles will perform Friday as part of the continuing Friday night concert series. The featured band for the evening will be the Rushing Wind Band, a contemporary Christian music group from Parsons. The group has performed throughout the Midwest from Clarksville, Tenn., to Colorado Springs, Colo., as far north as South Dakota and as far south as Texas. Garbage was on the agenda at Tuesday evening's Fort Scott City Commission meeting as two ordinance amendments were up for discussion. The first of the amendments was in regards to those who haul garbage. Fort Scott Codes Administrator Amanda Proffitt said the amendment spells out more specific requirements in which a vehicle must meet during an inspection to receive a license to haul garbage...

Early Wednesday morning the traffic lights at 6th Street and Highway 69 took a direct hit from lightning. According to city officials, these lights will be on a 4-way red flashing light basis until they are repaired Thursday afternoon.

Fort Scott High School head cross country coach Tracey Bogina has seen a spike in the numbers on her team this season. After a few years of low numbers, there are 17 boys and girls out this year. "That's pretty good numbers for cross country," Bogina said Wednesday afternoon. "With other good sports to choose from, I'm glad these kids chose ours."...
