Kansas to automatically enroll unemployment applicants for job-search services

TOPEKA -- The State of Kansas has launched a new registration process that automatically registers unemployment insurance (UI) applicants for job-search services available at kansasworks.com, the State's official labor exchange job posting site. Through the new registration process, Kansans who apply for UI benefits online or by phone will automatically be issued a username and password for a personal account at kansasworks.com, where they can search job openings, post an online résumé, save job searches and receive e-mail updates.. ...

Police led on high-speed chase early Saturday

A local man led Fort Scott police officers on a high speed chase early Saturday. According to a Fort Scott Police Department report, Nathan Beerbower, 32, who was driving a 1994 Chevy pickup shortly after 3:30 a.m. Saturday, ran a stop sign at the corner of Wall and Main streets. Beacon sees more people in need of food

Increasingly tough economic times caused more than 1,200 area residents to seek food assistance at the Beacon during the month of June. This is an increase from the 828 people who asked the Beacon for food assistance in June of 2006, according to Beacon director Bob Eckles. Hurricanes win yet another title

The Fort Scott Hurricanes swim team celebrated its eighth consecutive undefeated season and Southeast Kansas Swimming League championship with an awards ceremony at Buck Run Community Center Wednesday night.
