Fred W. Baker, Jr., 92, of Oklahoma City, Okla., formerly of Fort Scott and of Hutchison, Kan., died September 25, 2008, at the Hearthstone Assisted Living in Oklahoma City, Okla. Juanita Stanley, age 94, a lifelong resident of Fort Scott, Kansas, died Monday, September 29, 2008, at the Mercy Health Center in Fort Scott. She was born September 18, 1914, in Fort Scott, the daughter of Harry L. Daum and Effie Baldwin Daum. She married Roy W. Stanley on May 27, 1931, in Fort Scott. The USD 234 school district has seen a 25 student increase in the 2008-09 school year's total head count. In the district's full-time equivalency enrollment count, there was an increase of about 34 students. According to information provided by the district, both Winfield Scott Elementary and Fort Scott Middle school have experienced a surge in students this year.
