100 YEARS AGO (1907) Fire Chief Ausman has discovered a defect in the alarm station at headquarters and whenever an alarm is sounded the larger bell gives a deceptive signal, many times ringing so rapidly that it is difficult to tell which box has been touched off. Last evening the chief had the bell thoroughly checked and adjusted. Doris Smith was shocked when she got a piece of mail from the City of Fort Scott. It was a past-due notice from the utility department saying she owed an unpaid amount from the previous month’s bill. The amount: 1 cent. On Sept. 27, Smith wrote a check for that months utility bill. She wrote the check for $41.25. The bill was $41.26. One penny difference...
