Webb City and Louisburg went down to the wire in the final match of the day with the championship of the season-opening Fort Scott Dual Tournament on the line at the FSHS gymnasium Saturday while the Tigers turned in impressive performances in finishing third.

The Tigers went 3-2 on the day, beating Jayhawk-Linn, Cherryvale and Class 6A Shawnee Mission West. Their losses were to Louisburg and Webb City, the top two finishers who needed an overtime period to settle things when they faced off for the title.

"We had an awesome day today," Fort Scott head coach David Brown said. "An absolutely awesome day."

Louisburg led Webb City 37-22 with four matches to go. But Webb City fought back to get within 37-31 going into the final match between the Cardinals' Taven Meister and Louisburg's Tyler Ewy.

All Louisburg needed to win the championship was to make sure Ewy didn't get pinned. The match might not have had to go to overtime except that Ewy was called for stalling twice, which gave Meister a chance to stay alive.

Even though overtime is sudden death, the rules allow a wrestler the chance to complete a pinning move, so Meister could have still picked up the full six points to tie the dual. The complicated tiebreakers would have then come into play to determine the champion.

Luckily for Louisburg, all Meister could get was a takedown. He won the match but the Wildcats won the tournament.

Jayhawk-Linn, coached by former Brown pupil Brett Kramer, was only able to bring five wrestlers to the tournament and finished 0-5. Individually, the Jayhawks were able to pick up a few victories.

There would be no surprise on the Tigers' part in that veteran wrestlers Denzell Davis and Justin Sharp were each unbeaten on the day. But there were also some pleasant surprises on the part of three freshmen: Tyler Sharp, Victor Hughes and John Metcalf. They combined to win 13 of 15 matches.

Davis and the older Sharp could switch places between 119 pounds and 125 pounds. Saturday, Brown chose to put Davis in the lower weight class. His most impressive win was his first one, where he got a takedown with three seconds left in the match to beat Louisburg's Austin Hood, 4-3. Sharp, meanwhile, recorded pins in each of the three matches he got to wrestle (He received two wins via forfeit.)

"Davis started off with a very good wrestler," Brown said. "Hood is a 112-pound guy wrestling up so he can have a match (instead of winning by forfeit at 112). Justin is working on cutting weight so we can swap them around as strategy calls for."

The younger Sharp wrestles 103 and began his high school career against Louisburg freshman Cullen Hood, who entered the tournament ranked No. 1 in that weight class by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association. He won his other four matches, two by forfeit and two by pinfall.

"He's going to be a pretty good 103-pounder," Brown said.

Hughes is listed at 125 pounds on the roster but took on the challenge of wrestling up at 130. He started his high-school career with a 6-0 win over Louisburg's Jacob Herbert. His other three victories came via pinfall.

"He's made a definite impression," Brown said. "He showed he can make some things happen."

Metcalf's success at 160 ought not to be a surprise to Tiger followers. He's the son of assistant coach Alvin Metcalf and his older brother, also named Alvin, was a x-time State qualifier. It may have come as a surprise to his opponents that he was 5-0 with four pins. His first victory was a pin of Louisburg's Chad Turney. He was one of just three Tigers who did not receive at least one forfeit.

"John's not intimidating in terms of his looks and demeanor," Brown says. "But when the whistle blows, he's as aggressive as you're going to find. With him, technique definitely pays off."

Jonathan Hoyle, Dane Cummings, Kenneth Singmaster and Jesse Malveaux all recorded 3-2 records on the day. Michael Durossette was 2-3 while Jacob Gillen and Drew Bryant were both 1-4. Gillen is a freshman who wrestled up one class to 145 to help the team fill as many spots as it could. Bryant was suffering from the lingering effects of an illness that kept him out of school earlier in the week.

The Tigers didn't fill the 112- and 152-pound brackets. They don't have anyone who can fill the 112 slot and Blake Cowen, who normally fills the 152 spot, was attending a music competition.

In terms of the team, Brown felt very good about how the Tigers finished.

"I feel good about what we did with the kids we have and how they've progressed in the three weeks since practice started," Brown said. "I'm looking forward to the progress I think we can show next week at Eudora."
