Coffeyville sweeps 'Hounds

Fort Scott Community College's volleyball team couldn't prevent Coffeyville's tall players and big leapers from controlling the net Wednesday night and fell to the visiting Red Ravens in three games, 25-15, 25-7, 25-15.

Coffeyville's 6' 2" Cheyenne Russell, 6' 1" Grashawanna Briscoe, and 5' 7' Raissa Santos, the one with the high vertical jump, had their way in attack and 5' 11" middle blocker Chelsea Childs took the Greyhounds down when they tried to attack.

Fort Scott, 1-8 in the Jayhawk Conference-Eastern Division and 8-18 overall, lost its seventh consecutive match, six of which have been 3-game sweeps. Coffeyville improved to 3-5, 22-11.

The match didn't become one-sided until the middle of the first game. The Greyhounds had just rallied from an early 8-3 deficit to get within 14-12. A kill by Katie Van Lue, one by Bailey Dodson and then a Dodson block brought Fort Scott within 2 points.

But then Briscoe and Childs picked up a pair of kills and Briscoe served consecutive aces to put the Ravens up 19-12. Fort Scott got back within 20-15 and was doing everything it could to keep pace. At one point, Dodson somehow kept a ball alive by hitting it with her heel during a rally. And, yes, that's legal.

But the Red Ravens close out the first game by scoring the last 5 points. Then they opened the second game with an 11-3 run. The lead grew to 19-5 and the 'Hounds scored only 2 of their 7 points when they had the serve.

The flat play continued for the Greyhounds in the third game as the Red Ravens went out to a 7-1 lead. It was 23-11 when Coffeyville decided to send in some bench players.

Dodson finished with 8 kills to lead the Greyhounds; Lindsay Smith had 5. Kara Baker dished 9 assists and Kara Probert dished 5. Van Lue recorded 4 blocks.

The Greyhounds will go to Lee's Summit, Mo., Friday for a 6 p.m. match against Longview College. They'll have three matches next week, traveling to Neosho County for a conference match Monday, hosting Cowley for another conference tilt Wednesday, then concluding the regular season with a home match against Cottey College.
