Darrell Eugene Thompson

Darrell Eugene Thompson of South Coffeyville, Okla., crossed into Heaven on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2023.

Darrell was born to John and Edna Thompson on Nov. 13, 1938 at Altamont, Kan. The family moved to Oklahoma where Darrell attended Snow Creek Grade School. They then moved to Coffeyville, Kan., where he attended Field Kindley High School and Labette County High School at Altamont, Kan., graduating with the class of 1957. Darrell furthered his education for two years at Coffeyville Community College.

Darrell worked for the railroad before proudly serving his country. He was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood Army Base in Missouri for six months of training followed by six years of service with the Army National Guard Reserves.

Darrell met the love of his life, Rowena Hine at the Edna Café where she was working as a waitress. The couple were united in marriage on Nov. 19, 1961 in Alluwe, Okla., with his aunt, Minnie Thompson as their officiant. The couple would have celebrated their 62nd anniversary on the 19th of this month.

The couple made their home in Fort Scott, Kan., where Darrell worked at Whiteside IGA for 39 years. After his retirement, the couple moved to South Coffeyville, Okla., where Darrell loved to ride motorcycles with his son, Steve and their other buddies on many long and short road trips to several states. He enjoyed hand crafting leather beaded belts and bracelets and working jigsaw puzzles. He liked softball, basketball and football games and would attend when he could; he also enjoyed attending the local Interstate Fair and Rodeo.

Darrell was a member of Grace Fellowship Church in Coffeyville. He was a great man who didn’t know a stranger and made friends wherever he would go. He will be dearly missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Surviving to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Rowena Thompson of the home, son, Steve Thompson and wife, Cindy of Caney, Kan., brother, Johnie L. Thompson of South Coffeyville, Okla., along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended relatives and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Edna Thompson and sisters, Colene Dillon and Carolyn Selcho.

Following Darrell’s wishes, cremation will take place under the direction of David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville, Kan.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 18, 2023 at 10 a.m. at Grace Fellowship in Coffeyville. Pastor Doug Mund will officiate.
