Tiger golfers second in tourney, second in SEK

Tuesday, April 17, 2018

With a second-place finish in their home tournament Monday at Woodland Hills Golf Course, Fort Scott High’s golf team moved into second place in the Southeast Kansas League following the second of four designated tournaments.

Three-time defending SEK champion Chanute won the team title with a four-man score of 334, which was actually their highest of the season. The Blue Comets have been below 320 as a team routinely so far this season.

The Tigers shot 352 led by the second-place finish of Nick King, who shot 40 on the front nine and 42 on the back for a total of 82. Chanute’s Austin Liudahl, the SEK’s defending individual champion, was the only competitor to shot below 40 on either nine and 80 for the course as he scored 38-40—78.

Hudson Horn also earned a medal for the Tigers, shooting 44-45—89. It was his best score since shooting a ninth-place 84 in the season-opening tournament at Frontenac on April 3.

“Hudson, who’s struggled some this year, medaling was a great thing,” Fort Scott head coach Ken Klassen said. “Of course, Nick, who’s medaled every tournament so far this year, is continuing his success. Carter Goldston was just one stroke out of the medals. And if I’m correct, Lucas Harryman was two strokes out. So they, too, did a great job.”

Carter Goldston finished 11th with his 46-44—90 and Lucas Harryman was 12th at 42-49—91. Harryman matched his season best in helping the Tigers post their best team score since a 342 at Frontenac.

“We are showing slow, steady progress,” Klassen, said. “I’m proud of how the guys did today on their home course.

“We need to continue to the progress to have a reasonable chance to make it to State as a team,” he added. “This is a wonderful group of young men to work with and if we continue to improve, that is our goal.”

Alex Williams shot 51-47—98 for Fort Scott and Kaleb Guilfoyle finished at 60-58—118.

Chanute golfers finished in three of the top four spots as Cole Wheeler took third at 41-42—83 and Kobe Chance was fourth at 45-40—85.

League-wise, Chanute’s total after two tournaments is 661. Fort Scott moved into second place at 733, moving over Pittsburg. The Purple Dragons have shot 743 over two tourneys. Labette County is fifth at 761 followed by Independence at 818. Coffeyville and Parsons are ineligible for the team title has both schools did not have full teams for the first SEK tournament at Independence.

Drew Fuentez of Parsons saw his lead in the individual race shrink to one stroke after he shot a seventh-place 42-44—86 at Fort Scott. He now leads Wheeler by one stroke, 161 to 162. Wheeler passed and Liudahl passed teammate Clete Carlson in the standings.

King, seventh entering Monday’s play, is now tied for fifth at 168 with Chance and Labette County’s Jack Peake. Goldston is tied for eighth at 183 with Pittsburg’s Logan Wiske. Horn is 14th at 191 and Harryman 15th at 194.

The top 10 finishers after the four SEK tournaments earn All-League First Team honors. The second 10, ties included, will receive Honorable Mention status.

The two remaining SEK tournament are at Coffeyville May 1 and Chanute May 7.

The Tiger varsity is idle until May 26 when it will play in the Labette County Invitational at Oswego. The JV will host its home tournament Monday beginning at 3 p.m. at Woodland Hills.
