Tigers fourth in Chanute tourney

CHANUTE — Fort Scott High’s tennis team finished fourth in a six-team round-robin tournament here Tuesday. This was a make-up of a tournament that had been postponed earlier in the season.

The No. 2 team of Joe Adams and Elijah Wright (12-2) finished in second place in their pool. They defeated Elijah Fawson/Jackson Cone of Iola in their first match, 8-5. They lost to Fisher Lund/Brayden Frederick of Chanute, 8-3, but came back for an 8-0 shutout over Tim Epler/Reese White of Columbus. They also defeated Ashton King/Max Holmes of El Dorado, 8-5, and Seth Jones/Jordan Sutton of Labette County, 8-3.

Alex Gorman and Micah Self (17-9) finished third in No. 1 doubles. They beat John Miller/Brett Plumlee of Iola in their opener, 8-4. They lost to Trey Karsten/Alvaro Ribas of Chanute, 8-2. They bounced back to beat Luke Laws/Pete Westervelt of Columbus, 8-2, but lost to Tyler Johnson/Mason Holmes of El Dorado by the same score. In their final match of the day, they defeated Jaqwaun Williams/Like Falkenstein of LCHS, 8-5.

Jacob Bailey (8-19) finished fourth in No. 1 singles. He lost to Isaiah Fawson of Iola, 8-4, Scout Lee of Chanute, 8-3, and Logan Stenseng of El Droado, 8-1. He picked up default wins over Columbus and Labette County as they did not have players in that position.

Xavier Watkins played his first varsity singles matches of the season and went 2-3 in No. 2 singles. He lost to Rhett Allen of Iola and Braden Robinson of Chanute by 8-0 scores in his first two matche and also lost to Adam Haines of El Dorado, 8-3. He, like Bailey, picked up forfeits over Columbus and Labette County.

The regular season has concluded. The Tigers took part in the Southeast Kansas League Tournament at Pittsburg on Thursday. They have been assigned to the Chanute Class 4A Regional, which will be held May 4 and 5. Other teams at Chanute will be Labette County, Coffeyville, Columbus, El Dorado, Independence, Iola, Parsons and Winfield.


JV squad wraps up season at Parsons

PARSONS — Fort Scott High School’s junior varsity tennis team concluded its season here Monday at a tournament hosted by Labette County, finishing fourth.

Drew Rhoades won the No. 1 singles pool going 4-0. He defeated Marc Smith of Chanute, 6-1, David Wilson of Parsons, 6-2, P.J. Monsour of Pittsburg, 6-1, and Samson Mah of Independence, 6-3.

Xavier Watkins and Allen Santana were 1-3 in No. 1 doubles. They lost their first three matches, 6-2 to Kolby Ussery/Ta Wichakorn of Chanute, 6-2 to Trevor Strathe/Pierce Thomas of Parsons, and 6-0 to David Green/Jake Russian of Pittsburg. They defeated Evan Carnes/Shane Sanders of Independence, 6-4.

Hollis Reeves and Franklin Torres were 0-4 in No. 2 doubles. They lost all four matches 6-0 to Angelo Andoyo/Isaac Lewis of Chanute, Matt McCallum/Julian Nance of Parsons, Paul Worsley/Griffin Cooper of Pittsburg, and Cooper Short/Seth Stroble of Independence.
