Richard Leroy Ramsey

Richard Leroy Ramsey, age 79, a long-time resident of Uniontown, Kan., and more recently of Fort Scott, Kan., passed away early Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015, at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan., following a brief illness. He was born Jan. 4, 1936, on the family farm southwest of Uniontown, the son of Elmo L. Ramsey and Mary Rogers Ramsey. Richard graduated from the Uniontown High School with the Class of 1953. In July of 1957, Richard joined the United States Air Force and was stationed at Edwards Air Force Base in California until April of 1962. He married Janice Clark on Oct. 18, 1959. They made their home in Uniontown until moving to Fort Scott in November of 2014. Richard retired from Bourbon County as a road grader operator in 2006. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Order of the Eastern Star. Richard had served on the Uniontown cemetery board for over 40 years. He enjoyed reading history and had an amazing memory of dates. He also loved to hunt coyotes.

Richard will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Janice, of the home in Fort Scott; four children, Lisa Barker and husband, Don, of Nevada, Mo., Cheryl Koppa and husband, Jim, of Fort Scott, Jeff Ramsey and wife, Robyn, of Hugoton, Kan. and Joel Ramsey and wife, Laura, of Fort Scott; 11 grandchildren Brett Campbell and wife, Kayla, Trevor Campbell and wife, Jami, Steve Ramsey and wife, Courtney, Daniel Koppa and wife, Elaina, Derek Koppa and wife, Randi, Josh Ramsey, Denton Ramsey and wife, Suzy, Reed Ramsey, Dane Ramsey and wife, Alli, Mariah Lulf and husband, Aaron, and Miranda Ramsey; and 11 great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Kennadie, Rush, Austyn, Brecken and Landry Campbell, Aden, Adalyn and Brylynn Koppa and Alden, Bryce Ramsey. Also surviving is a brother, Kenneth Ramsey and wife, Pat, of Joplin, Mo., and a brother-in-law, David Clark, of Independence, Kan. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Ryan Christopher Campbell.

The family will conduct a funeral service at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 14 at the Cheney Witt Chapel. Burial will follow in the U.S. National Cemetery with military honors provided by the Olson Frary Burkhart Post No. 1165 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Cheney Witt Chapel.
