PITTSBURG -- Fort Scott High School's golf team earned a season-best second-place finish by one stroke at Crestwood Country Club here Tuesday.

Fort Scott finished with a four-woman score of 424 over 18 holes while Caney Valley followed at 425. Chanute was the winner at 379.

"What a great surprise for the girls when scores were being posted and they found out they had earned 2nd place as a team," Fort Scott head coach Karen Curran said. " It was a total team effort.

"It was great for the girls to beat Caney, a very strong team, and Girard. We've been chasing them all season and finally caught them yesterday. And it was good to have beaten Columbus by a number of strokes going into the final SEK tournament on Thursday."

Due to bad course conditions at Columbus, today's tournament has been moved to Oswego with a 3 p.m. start time. This is the last of three tournaments to determine the league champion.

Chanute leads the SEK as a team and also has the individual leader in Taylor Gard, who finished second here. Pittsburg's Maggie Sloan was the winner with a 40 on the front nine and 44 on the back for an 84. Sloan finished at 40-45--85.

Kacie Brown posted her best score at Crestwood as she finished sixth for the Tigers at 48-49--97. Devan Lloyd placed eighth at 49-50--99, breaking 100 for the first time and scoring 21 strokes better than in last year's meet here.

Riley Wunderly tied a personal best with her score of 49-51--100, which earned 10th place. Ashleigh Marquardt's 56-72--128 rounded out the Tigers' team scoring after playing Crestwood for the first time in her career.

"Ashley struggled for about eight holes and then was able to find her swing," Curran said. "I'm very proud of how she recovered and ended up posting a career low for nine holes (on the back nine).

Karley Stark finished at 72-71--143 for the Tigers while Hayley Kruse finished at 75-88--163.

Only two tournaments remain before Class 4A Regionals, which will be held at Chanute.
