During the summer months, many area residents take part in various fun outdoor activities that can turn tragic if certain safety precautions are not followed.

According to a press release from the State of Kansas Office of the Fire Marshal, area residents should take several precautions when camping or cooking outdoors.

When using grills or any type of outdoor cooking device on decks or patios residents should make sure they leave sufficient space form siding and eaves. Barbecue grills should be supervised at all times while in use, and children and pets should be kept away from the grills.

According to the press release, only charcoal starter fluids designed for barbecue grills should be used when using these types of grills, and fluid should not be added after the coals have been lit. When using gas grills, residents should be sure the hose connection is tight. Also, the hoses should be checked for possible leaks by applying soapy water to the hoses. It is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions and have the grill repaired by a professional if needed, the press release said.

Area residents who enjoy setting up their tents and camping outside should follow several safety recommendations, according to the press release.

Campers should make sure to purchase and use only flame retardant tents that are set up far away from the campfire. Only battery-powered flashlights and lanterns should be used inside the tent or other closed space. Campers should avoid the use of liquid-filled heaters or lanterns inside the tent, according to the press release.

Campfires should be built down-wind away from tents. In addition, all vegetation should be cleared and a campfire pit should be dug and surrounded by rugs before a campfire should be built. Liquid fire starter should be stored away from tents and campfires. Only dry kindling should be used to freshen a campfire. It is important for campers to make sure campfires are put out before they go to sleep or leave their campsites. In order to extinguish the fire, cover it with dirt or pour water over it, the press release said.
